Hampden-Sydney College seeks a Dean of Culture and Inclusion. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the senior staff, the Dean of Culture and Inclusion will lead the Colleges efforts to foster a College community that exemplifies a more perfect union. The Dean will work collaboratively with other senior staff members and campus offices to develop, implement, and evaluate programs and initiatives to accomplish these goals and realize our vision for the Colleges culture. The Dean will lead the Colleges Office of Culture and Inclusion and its staff.

Specific Duties include:
- Advise the President and College administrators on issues relating to diversity and inclusion and act as a leadership voice to enable and ensure that Hampden-Sydney adheres to its mission, codes of conduct and honor, and values and is an inclusive community for all stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with the Dean of Faculty, the Dean of Students, other senior team members, the Office of Human Resources, the Intercultural Affairs Committee, and student leaders to strengthen the Colleges student and campus cultures so that they reflect the high ideals and expectations of our mission and codes of conduct and honor.
- Work collaboratively with the President, Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, Vice President of Enrollment, Chief Human Resources Officer, and other College administrators to achieve campus-wide goals around diversity and inclusion. This includes creating and assessing metrics to measure the quality and effectiveness of programs, activities, and the Colleges progress toward achieving its diversity and inclusion goals.
- Collaborate with department and program leaders to ensure that their programming and initiatives represent diverse perspectives and experiences.
- Serve as a member of the Deans Council and work closely and collaboratively with the Dean of the Faculty and the Dean of Students to improve student retention and graduation rates and to advance our student and faculty academic diversity and inclusion efforts.
- Serve on committees as appropriate and as assigned, including as an ex officio member of the Intercultural Affairs Committee.
- Serve, as appropriate, as the point of contact and a resource for coordinated responses to issues of bias, harassment, or discrimination that may arise within the community and/or at the College, and proactively work to address potential issues.
- Identify, develop, foster, and maintain active partnerships with campus groups, alumni affinity groups, and various community, civic, and professional organizations to develop and promote diversity and inclusion through existing and new educational programs, services, training, communications, and campus community events.
- Represent the College as Hampden-Sydneys liaison to local and national organizations, conferences, and programs (including the Moton Museum, the local chapter of the NAACP, and the Longwood and Farmville Pride organizations).
The Dean of Culture and Inclusion will also lead the Office of Culture and Inclusion. Specifically, the Dean will:
- Direct and manage operations of and professionals working in the Office of Culture and Inclusion, who include a One Brotherhood Programming Coordinator, an Accessibility and Title IX Coordinator, and a Coordinator of Athletic Diversity and Inclusion.
- Coordinate, in partnership with other campus offices and staff members, educational, cultural, and social programs, including campus-wide cultural heritage month celebrations and initiatives and the Minority Alumni Mentorship Weekend.
- Develop and oversee an annual budget for the Office of Culture and Inclusion and ensure the department operates in a fiscally sound manner.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the President.
Ideal candidates will have at least a Bachelors degree and significant leadership experience in educational, corporate, or not-for-profit organizations and a successful record of implementing and advancing strategies that promote a welcoming and inclusive organizational environment. A Masters or Doctoral degree is preferred, which may bring opportunities for the Dean to teach or to co-teach in the Colleges academic program. In addition, the successful candidate for this position will:
- have a deep appreciation for the role of organizational culture in influencing behavior, a passion for creating a diverse and inclusive campus environment, knowledge of current diversity issues, and a clear understanding of the value of a diverse and inclusive environment;
- have experience in successfully leading organizational change efforts and be a catalyst for change in a complex and dynamic environment;
- be both decisive and consultative, with the ability to foster open communications and proactively build positive relationships with faculty and staff members, students, and all other College constituencies;
- be a strong and confident listener and communicator who establishes credibility with the Colleges many constituencies; and be able to lead in the face of complex, potentially charged and emotional social issues.
