Seeking up to 4 deck hands personnel to work on a dustpan dredge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to performs a variety of work involved in the maintenance and repair of the deck and general housekeeping functions on dredges, towboats, barges, or other floating plant vessels.

Duties are performed while underway and include, but are not limited to the following:

Ø Handles and fastens mooring lines and cables to piers; handles lines to secure barges and other craft coming alongside of the dock; splices cables, lines, and eyelets; replaces work lines and other cables; handles tow lines while moving barges and/or other floating plant along docks or in fleet anchorage area. (30%)

Ø Performs light rigging, attaches cables and slings to equipment and materials to be lifted with cranes or floating derrick; makes hookup to crane and signals crane operator for hoisting, lowering, or other movements of positioning. Greases cables and crane machinery. (30%)

Ø Performs assigned tasks to assist in replacing heavy cables on vessels and floating derrick; placing drydock under floating plant; moving sunken craft or equipment; dismantling heavy pieces of machinery on floating plant; loosening bolts, holding, and steadying parts to prevent dropping or slipping until free for moving. (20%)

Ø Works directly with supervisor in connecting, repairing, and placing pipeline and flanges, shifting pontoons, removing obstructions from dustpans, cutterhead pump, and pipelines. Straightens and replaces lines on pontoons; operates steam and electric winches or capstans and hoist. Connects and moves shore pipe; operates baffle plate at end of discharge pipeline, ensuring that material is properly placed; loads and secures pipe on flats for removal to new location. (10%)

Ø Performs routine manual laboring duties such as preparing surfaces to be painted by chipping, scaling, and removing old paint. May occasionally apply rust preventive coat of paint to exterior and interior of plant equipment and vessels. Performs general housekeeping work on floating plant and in shops such as cleaning, sweeping, washing, polishing, and removing snow or ice from fleet vessels and at yards or docks. Loads and unloads equipment, supplies, and stores to and from plant vessels. Cleans and cares for tools and equipment used to include wrenches, hammers, slings, cables, and paint brushes. Loads and unloads materials, supplies and equipment to and from trucks, warehouses, and offices. (5%)

Ø Will be assigned emergency duties as specified in the Station Bill. Will be required to participate in all duties and drills to ensure the safety of the vessel and fellow crew members. (5%

Ø Performs other duties as assigned within scope of duties.

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE

Ø Must know and observe all safety rules and regulations pertaining to the assigned work.

Ø Must have a knowledge of common marine practices and the use of tools and equipment associated with deckhand duties.

Ø Must have the skill to handle cables and ropes used in carrying out various vessel functions, to include ability to accomplish necessary rigging.

Ø Must have a good knowledge of the maintenance requirements for the machinery and equipment associated with operating the vessel, to include knowing how to add lubricants, lubricate various machinery moving parts, remove paints, and apply rust preventatives using either brush or spraying equipment

RESPONSIBILITY

Performs all work assignments under the direct supervision of the Master of the vessel, Mate, Lead Deckhand, or other higher graded employee. Receives detailed directions for work to be performed but recurring duties are usually performed in accordance with various instructions and directions. Work is usually checked in progress for adequacy and compliance with instructions provided.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical effort is required in the handling of heavy equipment, and machinery. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking. May be required to wear respiratory projection.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice, in dirty or cramped situations.

Ø Must be able to pass a background check

Ø Must have two valid forms of government issued identification



PAY | Regular Time: $28.60/Hour | Overtime: $36/Hour

WORK SCHEDULE | 2 Weeks on 12 Hours per day (12 hours on|12 hours off) 7 days/week & 1 WEEK OFF SCHEDULE

TRANSPORTATION | Provided to and from the vessel
