POSITION: Dental Assistant Trainee

LOCATION: Red Cliff Community Health Center

WAGE: $15 – 17 per hour

SUPERVISOR: Dental Director

THIS IS A REGULAR FULL-TIME NON-EXEMPT POSITION

JOB SUMMARY: Serves as an entry level trainee with on-the-job training for dental assisting aiding the dentist in performing restorative, prophylactic, endodontic and surgical procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • . Performs limited intra-oral procedures and chairside assistant duties in all phases of prosthodontic, surgical, and endodontic as provided in general dentistry.
  • Receives and routes patients and assists patients in completing medical history questionnaire.
  • Charts examination and treatment information as relayed by dentist.
  • Maintains dental equipment in a clean and operative condition including sterilization of instruments, materials, and equipment.
  • Properly lays out all instruments and materials needed for each treatment, prepares all tray sets for operative, endodontic, and surgical procedures.
  • Instructs patients in preventive dental care; demonstrates brushing and flossing techniques and use of disclosing tablets; explains the cause of decay and its relationship to diet.
  • Learn to take radiographs, impressions for study models, applies rubber dam, removes sutures, performs prophylaxis, and apply topical fluoride.
  • Obtains and records vital signs as directed by dentist.
  • Relays dentist’s instruction to patients for post-op care.
  • Applies sealants as directed by dentist.
  • Gains knowledge to take, pour and trim models and fabricate custom temporaries.
  • Completes or is trained on repairs of dentures and partials and fabricates acrylic partials as directed by the Dentist either on the job or by means of training program.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all client’s specific information and data in accord with federal and state guidelines and requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance measures conducted within the Health Center.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Personal abilities and maturity to function in a fast-paced environment, to interact positively with dental patients across the lifespan.
  • Demonstrates good public relations and customer service skills.
  • Proven ability to work as a team member.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Able to read, understand, and follow written and verbal ins ructions. Must be dependable and reliable and able to function with reasonable independence within a setting requiring professional oversight.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma, HSED, or GED.
  • Possess the desire and ability to complete additional training in radiographic techniques, oral anatomy and bone structure, dental disease prevention technique, basic dental terminology, recordkeeping and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards that relate to sterilization and infection control.
  • Annual CPR certification/recertification as required by Health Center staff. If not certified, must complete within six months of hire date.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Considerable contact with patients, the general public, tribal leadership, Program Directors and staff, consultant(s), and the Tribal Community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties assigned to this position involve bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying. Items may be placed in overhead storage or shelving. Weights to be carried are usually less than 50 pounds. At times, the Dental Assistant will be required to personally assist patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Red Cliff Community Health Center-exposure to hazards of the healthcare industry. Work setting must be maintained as a clean, non-smoking, well-ventilated area in compliance with all applicable safety regulations. All Tribal Buildings are smoke free.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The ability to travel and attend meetings and trainings; overnight and out of town, both locally & nationally.
