The primary purpose of the Haywood County Health and Human Services Dental Program is to improve the oral and dental health of the children and adults through education/promotion, prevention, and clinical dental care. Employees work with local health agencies and schools in promoting dental health education and in providing dental care and treatment for Haywood County Residence. Work requires independent professional responsibility and is performed under the general supervision of the Health Director.
Primary Purpose of the Position
The purpose of the Dentist I position is to provide dental services for the Haywood County Health and Human Services Dental Program. The Dentist I will have responsibilities in providing quality comprehensive dental clinical services, including community education/promotion, prevention, and clinical dental care. This is professional work in providing dental services to patients in a state institution or public health program. Employees perform examinations to determine and deliver dental treatment. Employees plan and conduct dental health education and clinical treatment programs and serve as consultants to health units or other medical and paramedical services in a state institution, clinic or community health agency. Work may include the supervision of other dental personnel; such as dental assistants and/or dental hygienists. This work may include the training of dental residents and assistants and the promotion of dental health through educational and informational media. Work requires independent professional responsibility.
Work Schedule
Work schedule is 40 hours per week based on the needs of the community. Occasionally workdays may be adjusted to accommodate other work schedules. Emergency services would be performed as required. Other hours may be required per county policy. Description of Responsibilities and Duties
95.00% - Clinical Dentistry
- Evaluate patient health histories relative to needed dental care.
- Provide dental examinations, diagnoses, and treatment planning for children and adult population.
- Consult with parents concerning the dental needs/treatment of their children.
- Provide clinical dental services for patients, including preventive, primary restorative and routine surgical procedures.
- Complete, maintain, and monitor patient charts.
- Provide direct clinical supervision of dental auxiliaries.
- Participates in short and long-term planning of goals and objectives for the Dental Clinic.
- Stay informed of current dental science/practice through attendance at professional meetings and continuing dental education.
- Make necessary referrals based on dental needs.
- Maintain a current NC License.
- Provide direct dental oversight and supervision for all clinical dental team members.
- Performs other duties as assigned. 5.00% - Dental Public Health
- Assess and monitor the dental health needs of the Haywood County community.
- Work with Dental Hygienist in providing community dental health education for children, parents, educators, and health professionals.
- Participate in dental health promotion activities, such as promotional campaigns, community events, media coverage, and community health fairs.
- Plan and participate in community prevention activities such as sealant demonstrations, classroom plaque control, and oral screening/referral programs.
- Provide dental consultation for health department staff, school personnel, and other local authorities.
- Maintain professional relationships with area health providers and other local authorities working on behalf of children"s health and welfare (social services, child advocacy groups, preschool service coordinators, etc.).
- Maintain professional relationships with dental colleagues in all aspects of private and public health dentistry, including professional organizations and federal, state, and local dental service units.
- Attain CEU credits needed to maintain their NC Dental License.
- Adhere to policy, procedure and protocol listed in the Haywood County Personnel Manual, OSHA guidelines, Dental Practice Act of N.C., and ADA Code of Ethics.

- Graduation from an approved school of dentistry.
- Licensed to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina.
At the time of employment, must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners or currently have a NC Dental intern permit to practice dentistry in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners. If hired with an intern permit must set and pass dental board exam within one-year of hire date. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Special Requirements - - Thorough knowledge of dental practices and developments in the field of dentistry.
- Considerable knowledge of departmental polices, rules, and regulations pertaining to Dental health services.
- Considerable knowledge of dental health problems in the community or health facilities to which assigned
- Ability to supervise Dental Assistants, and Hygienists and other sub-professional personnel.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, departmental personnel from other professional disciplines within the institution, clinic, or community setting.
- Ability to perform dental work of a professional and independent nature.
- Ability to supervise and train dental assistants, hygienists, and residents.
- Ability to prepare and deliver lectures on dental health education to professional and community groups.

Applicants must submit official college transcripts (if applicable). Applicants must have NC Driver"s License and access to a vehicle. The applicant must have a clean driving record with no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV record.
