Job description
Almost 60% of youth in Detroit are chronically absent, putting them behind in their academic career. Chronic absence is a complex problem and there is not one solution to fix it. Chronic absence stems from the lack of resources in households and in the community. That is why the Detroit AmeriCorps Mentor Program will support 14 AmeriCorps members throughout the city of Detroit to serve as Mentors and Engagement & Resource members at 5 Charter Schools in Detroit. AmeriCorps Members, serving as either Mentors or Engagement & Resource members, will help families and youth by providing barrier reducing support to decrease the number of days they miss from school. A key indicator of student success is attendance and ensuring youth have a positive mentor in their life and families have support they need that will lessen the burden of poverty that is faced which is a major contributor to chronic absenteeism. Through this service and experience, members will make an impact on people's education futures. Additionally, members will gain important skills and knowledge for themselves that can help in future work endeavors.
