Thornwell is seeking a Director for the Child Development Center. The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, have at least one year’s experience in administration, and knowledge of South Carolina First Steps 4K and Head Start Performance Standards. The ideal candidate possesses strong knowledge and implementation ability of SC DSS Child Care licensing regulations and ABC Quality standards. The candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, communication and organizational skills and the ability to build strong relationships with children, teachers, staff, and families.

Core Responsibilities
- Manage daily activities of the center.
- Lead the process of recruiting, interviewing, and selecting, teachers and staff.
- See to it that teachers receive the training they need to maintain certification and to excel at their jobs.
- Maintain an attractive, safe, and orderly center-wide learning environment and
- Provide an inviting center atmosphere.
- Recruit families and secure their eligibility for Early Head Start, 3K, and South Carolina First Steps 4K.
- Ensure that the Center meets or exceeds all DSS, ABC Quality, Early Head Start and South Carolina First Steps 4K requirements.
- Ensure all personnel and student files meet DSS, ABC Quality, Office of Head Start, and DHEC regulations.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, such as conferences, workshops, academic courses, or teleconferences.
- Serves on the Leadership Team and Joint Leadership Team. The Leadership Team is responsible for supporting the mission, vision, purpose, and strategic plan of Thornwell. The Leadership Team is also responsible for collaborating with work groups, staff liaisons and senior staff on key strategies, challenges, and needs to provide insight on training, engagement, retention, and programs that will add value to the ministry.
- Perform any other mission related duties assigned by the Vice President for Educational Services.
Qualifications
Four-year degree in Early Childhood Education or a related degree. Some experience in CDC management and teacher supervision preferred. Must meet South Carolina DSS requirements for Director.
Skills
The job skills needed to be an effective CDC director include the director’s understanding of the program’s mission, the ability to communicate that mission to all stakeholders, and to lead in the fulfilling of the mission. The director must have a clear understanding of the curriculum standards for preschool classes, and the knowledge and skills to lead the faculty in the teaching of the core content and the learning standards required by Early Head Start and South Carolina First Steps. Regarding parents, the director will need to be sincere, understanding, and winsome as he or she recruits parents into the program and as he or she develops a healthy long-term working relationship with them. Early Head Start and First Steps require good organizational skills in record keeping and in managing the budget. The director will need to work very closely with the Vice President of Educational Programs to fulfill this mission.
Working Conditions
The director’s office will be in the Child Development Center (CDC) building on MacDonald Drive. The hours of operation will be from 7:30 A.M until 5:30 P.M.
