About the Position
: Under administrative direction of the Executive Director or designee, perform administrative and professional work in planning, directing and coordinating counseling and/or social work programs for consumers within the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Typical job functions include but are not limited to:

  • Administers a counseling and/or social work program in a hospital, a state hospital, or residential treatment facility to maintain accreditation standard of patient care; keeps current with accreditation standards.
  • Establishes goals and objectives of the counseling and/or social work department, coordinating the activities of the counseling and/or social work department with other hospital/residential activities. Monitors and evaluates the counseling and/or social work services furnished at the hospital.
  • Directs comprehensive programs of counseling and/or social work and consultation in a number of treatment settings providing a wide variety of casework and social services to patients and families of patients; provides direction to counselors and/or social workers, medical staff in treatment teams, and administrative staff involving the discipline of the social work role.
  • Allocates counselor and/or social work resources essential to provide clinical tasks in the following areas; Psychosocial assessments; family counseling and therapy; patient/family group therapy; linkage between hospital treatment and community resources, treatment programs and referrals upon discharge.
  • Confers and participates in problem solving activities, placement resources, and collaborates with psychiatric treatment team in diagnosis and treatment plan; may work directly in treatment relationship with patients, individually or in groups.
  • Serves as key member of several hospital committees; representing ODMHSAS facilities in various committee groups at the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, community agencies, and various other state and community functions.
  • Recommends and administers standards and procedures related to personnel, budget and physical facilities. Assist in preparation of departmental budget. Responsible for a departmental budget; develops and /or reviews request for supplies, equipment, personnel, physical facilities, etc. for the counseling and/or social work department operations.
  • Develops the organizational structure of all counseling and/or social work services; participates in organizational and committee structure of the hospital; directs the social work in service training and staff development programs.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with other agencies and organizations in the community toward meeting community needs and services; serves as link between patient, psychiatric agency and community.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, conference and workshops with social service organizations, educational institutions, professional and community groups.
  • Prepares documentation for surveys and reviews by accrediting or certifying agencies. Instructs staff in expectations and goals of meeting accreditation standards.
  • Reviews treatment plans and charts on treatment units and provides reports as necessary. Serves as patient care reviewer/advisor to the Clinical Director; tours units on a regular basis to maintain communication on treatment issues that need Clinical Director’s attention.
  • Confers with physicians and other clinical staff to insure that clinical services are delivered with DMHSAS guidelines, policies and procedures and the State and Federal legal framework.
  • Monitors or performs oral and written shift reports of all components to assure continuity of services, accuracy and thoroughness. Participates in morning report.
  • Identifies training needs and provides consultation to treatment teams.
  • Works closely with the planning function, staff development, risk management, safety and clinical disciplines and support staff of the facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Type/Salary:

  • Full-time
  • Annual Salary is $73,000/year, or $35.096154/hour
  • Primary Working Hours are M-F; 8-5
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

Completion of a master’s degree in social work, psychology, or other behavioral sciences, nursing, public or business administration or related field AND five (5) years of professional experience in hospital administration or management; management analysis; nursing; social work; risk management; or closely related area, or in a hospital or clinical facility substance use disorders or emergency, trauma or crisis services which must have included two (2) years experience in a supervisory or management capacity OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one (1) year of qualifying experience for one (1) year of the required education.


Note: No substitution will be allowed below the baccalaureate degree. If utilizing professional experience in Nursing as a qualification, experience requires a permanent OK Registered Nurse license.


Special Requirements:

Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill any job-related travel normally associated with this position and as such have a valid driver’s license.

About us:
Griffin Memorial Hospital (GMH) is in Norman, Oklahoma, and serves all 77 counties in Oklahoma as the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) treatment center for adults. GMH provides community crisis stabilization and residential treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health and trauma related conditions.

THIS AGENCY REQUIRES COVERAGE 24 HOURS, 7 DAYS PER WEEK. WORK HOURS AND LOCATION MAY VARY DEPENDING ON BUSINESS NECESSITY. EMPLOYEES MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK WEEKENDS AND OVERTIME.
