Organizational information:

The mission of the Hector and Gloria López Foundation is to provide post-secondary educational opportunities for Latino students in Texas, specifically students from El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. We invest in scholarships and support for students who are Latino, will be the first in their family to graduate from college or university and are financially under-resourced in their ability to pay for higher education. Function: The Director of Finance manages the finance and accounting functions of the Hector and Gloria López Foundation. They produce accurate financial reports and improve the current practices to increase the efficiency of the Foundation. They support the COO/CFO with board meeting preparation, manage budgets across multiple divisions, forecast future needs, and help the executive team make informed decisions that support the mission of the Foundation. This position involves collaborating with all levels of the organization.

FINANCIAL PLANNING Lead all short and long term financial planning, reporting, budgeting, accounting and cash management for four lines of business (Ranch/Buildings, Minerals, Investments, and Headquarters), with support from the COO/CFO

REPORTING FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Prepare financial statements for the executive team on a quarterly basis. Investigate, review and analyze variances, involving the department employees in this process if necessary; Take initiative to help manage expenses

REPORTING INVESTMENTS Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual investment performance reports. This includes coordinating with investment managers to obtain benchmark returns and to align return calculations for internal reports and board presentations

BOARD REPORTING Prepare financial presentation materials for quarterly board meetings including investment performance, financial statements for four lines of business

BUDGETING Lead the annual budgeting process involving all department leads, external management companies. Create and consolidate budgets for four lines of business: Ranch/Buildings, Minerals, Investments, and Headquarters

FORECASTING Lead the quarterly financial forecasting process involving all department leads, external management companies

CASH FLOW Lead the organizational cash flow process ensuring sufficient funds are available to meet operational needs and grant payout requirements, while maintaining minimum cash balances

ACCOUNTING Manage and oversee all accounting operations, bookkeeping, bank reconciliations for four lines of business (Ranch/Buildings, Minerals, Investments, and Headquarters); Includes oversight of reconciliation of general ledger and recording journal entries.

AUDIT Assist in the annual audit process. Coordinate and lead response to the audit information request and liaise with external auditors, in conjunction with COO/CFO; Review all reconciliations and audit work papers with help of external contractor/s

TAX Provide information for filing of 990-PF tax return, and prepare the calculations for quarterly tax payments, working with external tax contractor

TAX lead accounting team in preparation of Forms 1099, ensuring timely issuance of all 1099 forms

POLICIES, PROCEDURES and CONTROLS Maintain and enhance financial policies, procedures, and internal financial controls

Manage and comply with local, state and federal government reporting requirements

PEOPLE Indirect management and development of accounting team

SYSTEMS Continual enhancements of Quickbooks Online, Bill.com, and other software used by the finance team


What you bring to the role:
  • BS degree in accounting, finance or a relevant field required
  • Certified Public Accountant license required, investment and private equity accounting experience required
  • Experience with oil and gas a plus
  • 10+ years of broad financial and operations management experience, private foundation experience a plus
  • Proven track record in leading finance and/or accounting teams (direct leadership or indirect leadership)
  • Experience with and responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data and reporting, in accordance with US GAAP
  • Experience managing and consolidating multiple entities
  • Experience working in software tools: Quickbooks Online, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides), Microsoft Office, Adobe, Bill.com. Particularly strong spreadsheeting skills in both Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel
  • Successful track record of setting priorities, analytic, and problem-solving skills that provide decision support to the executive team; Ability to prioritize a range of tasks across multiple projects
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. You communicate clearly and are able to synthesize complex ideas into concise ideas
  • Detail-oriented; you are highly organized
  • Embrace feedback from colleagues and leader
  • Be adaptable to changing circumstances; you follow a plan, but you are also flexible and are comfortable making adjustments when necessary
  • Committed to equity; you believe in improving outcomes for all students
  • This position will be primarily in-person at the Foundation office located in downtown Austin. However, hybrid work is fully embraced in a structured format upon alignment with the leader. Person must be located in the surrounding area or willing to relocate.
