PIH-US accompanies visionary public health and community partners working to build strong, integrated, community-led health systems across the US. PIH-US currently supports local health departments, health providers, elected officials, and community leaders to define clear health and racial equity agendas, and provides technical advising and operational support to deliver on those commitments. Our current focus communities include: Montgomery, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; Immokalee, Florida; Newark, New Jersey; New Bedford, Massachusetts; North Carolina; and Pima County, Arizona. We capture learnings from across this network to mobilize resources, advance policy change, and lay the groundwork for stronger community health systems nationally.
Position Overvie w
We are seeking a Director of Human Resources who is inspired by our mission and provides strategic support and HR services in the areas of employee relations, organizational design and development, equity, diversity and inclusion, compensation analysis, change management, training, and communication. Reporting to PIH’s Chief HR Officer, the Director will establish and maintain solid working relationships with all levels of PIH-US management and staff and work with the PIH-US Executive Director to strategically and proactively analyze, monitor and address HR efforts required to support organizational goals and objectives. The Director will drive or participate in other projects and large-scale initiatives of PIH’s HR department, as required.
In close collaboration with PIH’s global Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Senior Manager, the Director will be a thought partner and advisor to the PIH-US Executive Director and team on promoting a diverse, inclusive, and anti-oppressive environment, and will guide training, processes and policies through an equity lens.
Responsibilities:
PIH-US staffing strategy and planning (15%)
- Partner with PIH-US Executive Director and management to map anticipated and evolving staffing needs for PIH-US, as PIH-US continues to transition from a time-bound emergency response initiative into a long-term program with a hybrid in-person/remote team.
- Support PIH-US Executive Director in building an equity-centered strategy around team development, retention, and career progression.
- Serve as thought partner & adviser to team leads and managers across PIH-US in building team structures and equity-centered inclusive work culture.
- Partner with PIH-US Racial Equity Advisory Group and PIH’s EDI Senior Manager on building channels for ongoing staff feedback on operationalizing PIH’s commitments to racial equity, as it relates to team management , culture, HR policies and practices.
- Serve as a member of the PIH-US cross-site management and leadership teams, actively participating in setting strategy, building a strong values-based team culture and ensuring operational excellence and strategic alignment across the organization.
- Monitor and evaluate efficiency of HR processes, providing timely updates and proposed solutions to PIH HR team.
Recruiting, hiring and onboarding (25%)
- Support hiring managers across PIH-US in stewarding equitable and inclusive hiring processes.
- Expand and diversify PIH-US’s recruiting pathways, nationally and locally in key markets, to better reach and source Black/Latinx/Indigenous candidates from the communities where we work.
- In close collaboration with PIH HR team, build a more robust PIH-US onboarding process, which is deeply people-centric and clearly communicates PIH’s values, building on PIH onboarding tools and resources.
Employee relations (30%)
- Act as a trusted advisor to PIH-US staff and management.
- Provide counseling and coaching to address performance issues, advise on conflict resolution, conduct investigations, monitor and assess work environment to proactively identify concerns and facilitate preventive steps.
Professional development and performance management (30%)
- Support managers in establishing professional development goals with their staff.
- Coach and support PIH-US managers to continually deepen their understanding of and engagement with dynamics of power, privilege, race, racism and other systems of oppression in their own management and leadership work.
- Partner with PIH-US Executive Director to execute bi-annual performance review process and work with U.S. Coordination Site to continue to improve performance management and evaluation tools and processes.
- Serve as partner in the implementation of PIH’s annual management training requirements and build out shared-team training and learning opportunities in alignment with management priorities.
- Collaborate with PIH-US’s Director of Learning & Impact to develop a more robust process to monitor/promote conference attendance and other speaking and presentation opportunities.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management, Business or Public Administration, or related field.
- Minimum 8 years of employee relations or HR generalist experience.
- Knowledge of anti-racist, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and experience using them to build more inclusive and equitable work environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent coaching, mentoring and facilitating skills.
- Ability to connect with and relate to a broad spectrum of people; ability to meet people where they are.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in fast-paced environment
- Entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated through prior experience working in start-up like environments building new teams or programs and/or flexibility in the face of rapidly evolving scope of work and new challenges.
- Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information with discretion and high level of professional ethics.
- Demonstrated commitment to health equity and social justice.
