Job description
In this role, the Director of Inpatient Pharmacy is responsible for management and oversight of all pharmacy related activities including medication storage, preparation, and delivery. The Director is responsible for the overall quality of pharmaceutical services provided to patients and the processes that lead to continuous performance improvement. The Director supports and fosters JPS Health Network’s mission and vision by ensuring the optimal delivery of quality pharmaceutical care in a cost-effective and convenient manner. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the pharmacy meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of JPS. The Director works with hospital administration, members of the medical staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to assure that lines of communications are open and processes for problem resolution are in place. Performance demonstrates efforts to improve patient satisfaction, lower costs, and improve quality.
JPS Health Network is a $950 million, tax-supported health care system for Tarrant County in North Texas. Licensed for 578 beds, the network includes an acute care hospital and more than 40 community-based clinics, including 19 school-based clinics. John Peter Smith Hospital is home to Tarrant County’s first and only Level 1 Trauma Center, its only psychiatric emergency services site and has the largest hospital-based family medicine residency program in the nation.

- Supports the mission and philosophy of JPS Health Network.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and origination related information.
- Plans, organizes and supervises activities of the Inpatient Pharmacy Department (Hospital, Oncology and Infusion, Specialty, and JPS Surgical Center in Arlington) according to hospital policies and directives, standard practices of the profession and state and federal laws.
- Organizes staffing in accordance with JPS approved budgetary guidelines.
- Evaluates, mentors, disciplines, and terminates personnel in accordance with JPS and Maxor policies.
- Establishes procedures to ensure the safe, appropriate and cost effective delivery of medications to patients in accordance with existing state and federal laws and established policies.
- Ensures records are maintained in accordance with these laws.
- Establishes billing and pricing procedures for the pharmacy operation subject to the approval of JPS.
- Ensures that medication is controlled throughout the health network.
- Ensures adequate medication supply for provision of patient care.
- Confers with patients and medical staff on professional problems as required and works to advance the practice of pharmacy.
- Works with the medical staff to establish a formulary system; evaluates and reviews medications for addition or deletion to or from the formulary.
- Takes responsibility for the proper labeling, storage, and distribution of all drugs, including investigational drugs.
- Takes responsibility for updating departmental policies and procedures.
- Integrates pharmacy services with strategic plans and goals.
- Coordinates controlling drug-purchasing cost by soliciting bid prices for non-contract items and utilizing group-purchasing agreements.
- Establishes proper records for receipt, issuance, destruction, and use of controlled substances.
- Prepares, monitors, and controls department supply and capital budgets.
- Establishes and maintains an effective inventory and procurement system.
- Develops justifications and capital item requests as necessary.
- Authorizes all purchases for department; submits appropriate requisitions for administrative review and approval as required by policy.
- Directs the development and implementation of pharmacy computer system and automated dispensing technology.
- Represents the hospital as a spokesperson for pharmacy policy and practices.
- Establishes and actively maintains communication with the medical and hospital professional staff.
- Actively participates in committees and task forces to address and resolve issues related to patient care and hospital operations.
Experience: Knowledge of inpatient operations and services, accreditation and other regulatory requirements is required. Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in hospital pharmacy practice, including at least three (3) years in a leadership position. Strong Clinical, financial, and analytical skills are required as are effective written and oral communication skills.

- Able to communicate effectively; speak, write and comprehend English
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with medical, nursing and professional staff
- Demonstrated ability in efficiently and effectively managing human, material, capital and financial resources
- Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload
- Must be able to work courteously, efficiently and accurately in a busy environment
- Must work accurately with attention to detail within specified timeframes
