KIPP Miami is part of the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) national nonprofit network of college-preparatory, public charter schools educating elementary, middle and high school students. At KIPP Miami, the Director of Student Experience will serve first as a member of our Regional Leadership Team, and then as a leader of three culture based project teams, and finally as a coach to our school based culture leaders. Using best practices, our vision for student experience, research, input and feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, and an equity lens for developing leaders, the Director of Student Experience will co-create a vision for KIPP Miami student culture at each grade band, and build capacity in our schools to ensure that we are on track to meeting our goals for kids each year. Assemble and Manage 3 Culture Vision Project Teams (behavior management, meaningful academic experiences, and meaningful non-academic experiences)
- Inspire, recruit, and select a broad swath of leaders to serve on each project team
- Determine meeting sequence, plan meeting agendas, and monitor progress for each team to meet established timelines for project implementation.
Co-create Our Vision for Student Experience
- Co-create our region-wide philosophy on non-negotiables for student culture.
- Document the current implementation of school culture systems, and propose changes and improvements.
- Monitor school culture data and suggest and co-create new data tools that will help us monitor school culture and the student experience.
- Support our schools to get extraordinary results for kids’ experiences, by engaging in coaching & strategy sessions with each school based on need
- Work with culture leaders in each school, by engaging in walk-throughs, observing O3s, observing and monitoring culture team meetings to determine which best practices currently exist and can therefore be incorporated into our vision for leading great school culture.
- Analyze data from major milestones with culture leaders at each school and make recommendations about how to move forward.
Manage Compliance
- Ensure that our tiered approach to behavior intervention is implemented with fidelity and threat-assessment investigations HIB investigations are completed thoroughly and in a timely manner and that appropriate follow-through with staff, students and families is completed.
- Attend all long-term suspension hearings and ensure that there is consistency across school types for these consequences.
- Work with the Managing Director of Operations who manages security to ensure that communication during and after major events are handled properly.
- Serve as a support to School Leaders, Heads of Schools, and Executive Director during crises.
Serve as an Outstanding teammate on the Regional Leadership Team:
- Constantly engage in self-work, reflection, and learning, to improve individual and TEAM approach to equity
- Collaborate with members of the RLT, to engage in coherent decision-making across schools, grade bands and content area
- Participate in routine meetings with the RLT and school-based support teams, to solve tactical matters, engage in strategic work together, build vertical content knowledge and program, etc.
- Participate in routine meetings with Heads of Schools, School Leaders, and APs, to solve tactical matters, engage in strategic work together, and respond to the most pressing needs our schools have
- Participate in teacher rubric scoring and rating, to help schools norm their scoring and calibrate the rubric scores for all teachers in a building
Coach and Support the Implementation of Our Vision for Student Experience
- Monitor the current implementation of school culture systems, and propose changes and improvements.
- Review and respond to school culture data by making adjustments and modifications to the school behavior management systems and/or by deploying coaching support to places most in need
- Support our schools to get extraordinary results for kids’ experiences, by engaging in coaching & strategy sessions with each school based on need
- By working with culture leaders in each school, build our school-based leaders’ content knowledge and leadership capacity - this may include engaging in walk-throughs, coaching O3s, leading and monitoring culture team meetings, supporting PD implementation, and more
- Analyze data from major milestones with culture leaders at each school and make recommendations about how to move forward
Lead and Engage in Professional Development
- As a resident content expert, lead professional development for leaders and teachers in accordance with the school management team’s annual professional development strategy, including monthly leader PD, Leading For Learning, Heartbeat Summit, etc. Note that, depending on the PD strategy, group sizes for professional development sessions may exceed 100 depending on the PD venue
- Engage in research and professional development opportunities within and outside of the school management team, to continuously grow and develop our team’s knowledge base, spread best practices, and improve on our collective coaching and leadership skills
- Ensure that appropriate culture leaders at each campus receive appropriate training in de-escalation and child restraint
