POSITION OVERVIEW:
Langston University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the American Institute for Goat Research (AIGR). This full-time, 12-month appointment has a negotiable start date and salary commensurate with experience.

This position will work closely with the Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs as well as with other members of SAAS administration to provide day-to-day leadership and management of Langston University's broad and diverse small ruminant research and extension programs and activities. The creative and dedicated leader will seek to enhance and strengthen the missions of AIGR and SAAS. The AIGR Director is administratively responsible to the Dean and Director of Land Grant programs.

The ideal candidate will be someone who brings energy, creativity, leadership, the spirit of teamwork, and imagination to the advancement of both applied and basic research, procurement of grants, and the ability to mentor the next generation of scientists and practitioners. Additionally, the position interfaces with a diversity of public/private partners and helps to ensure compliance with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and manages staff members to complete similar responsibilities.

The research program in AIGR includes attention to goats produced for meat, milk, and fiber and used for purposes such as vegetation management. It also includes research conducted with a flock of hair sheep as well. Product development, distribution and consumption will soon become core components of LU-AIGR. Other research areas of the SAAS are horticulture, aquaculture/ aquaponics, biotechnology, and agricultural business and economics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the scholarly and creative research work of the SAAS and AIGR faculty/ staff, including research grants, peer-reviewed publications, etc.
  • Serve as member of the SAAS administrative team, which functions collaboratively across the academics, research, extension education, global engagement, and outreach functions of the School.
  • Provide overall leadership and management of research and extension responsibilities of AIGR with efficient and safe operation of all the activities, the intellectual health and long- term vitality of the programs, and the stewardship of the human and financial resources essential to the successful fulfillment of the missions of SAAS and AIGR.
  • Participate in SAAS fiscal year reporting, budget planning and management of funds.
  • Serve as Research Integrity Officer for the Office of Research Integrity of LU.
  • Serve as Responsible Officer for the International Exchange Program of the SAAS, being responsible for use of SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System).
  • Assume other responsibilities assigned by the Dean.

Position Qualifications:


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctoral degree in Animal Science, Dairy Science, specialization in other related areas of Agriculture will also be considered, but some high-level training is Animal Science is necessary.
  • Distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments and or leadership experience (i.e., typically at least 7-10 years of service after Ph.D.) and strong record of academic, research, and grant successes.
  • Strong record of research accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated record of success in leadership, team-building, and fiscal and personnel management in a program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to research, cooperative extension & outreach, and equal opportunity.
  • Effective leadership and communication skills to successfully interact with stakeholders.
  • Ability to be a strong advocate for LU-SAAS and the Land-Grant Mission.
  • Familiar with relevant programs and activities of the USDA and USAID, as well as other potential national and international funding sources.
  • Ability to represent SAAS and AIGR within the University and beyond.
