Scope of the Position:
The DMA League Director of Adult Programs is responsible for overseeing staff that plan and execute Adult Programs (AP hereafter) including lectures, gallery talks, films, performances, workshops, concerts, the Arts & Letters Live literary and performing arts series, Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art, Pop of Art, the annual Murder Mystery Game, special events, and partner programs. This position has primary oversight and implementation of Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art and will work closely with the Education Director on the annual Pride Block Party. This position is one of three team leads within the Education Division. All team leads work closely with colleagues in Education, Curatorial, Collections, Exhibitions and Interpretation, Development, Marketing and Communications, and community partners to realize the museum’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Director of Education, the DMA League Director of Adult Programs develops the vision and strategy of the Adult Programs (AP) team to assure alignment with the collections, exhibitions, goals, and mission of the Museum.
  • Supervises, mentors, evaluates, and completes performance appraisals for the Manager of Adult Programs (I), Manager of Adult Programs (II), Senior Program Manager for Arts & Letters Live, and other staff and interns (as needed).
  • Provides dynamic leadership and direction for the AP team by fostering the development of measurable goals and objectives, budgets, and long-range plans aligned with institutional objectives.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Education and AP team to develop and implement innovative programming that aligns with the overarching vision of the Museum and develops new audiences.
  • Creates efficient work processes, meetings, and communication strategies that foster effective inter-group and intra-group collaboration and communications.
  • Oversees and implements DMA Late Night programs, leading the Late Night team and collaborating extensively with staff in all Museum departments.
  • Manages payment, logistic, and travel details for featured participants and performers as needed.
  • Actively contributes as a member of the museum-wide Leadership Team and other cross-functional teams charged with outlining strategies and tactics supporting institutional objectives.
  • Develops, manages, and works to achieve the financial goals of the AP budget. Provides appropriate accounting, statistical and narrative reports.

Partners with Development department to provide information to support fundraising opportunities, grant applications, and stewardship responsibilities.
Works with the Marketing and Communications team to develop marketing, media, social media, and advertising strategies for Adult Programming to reach new and diverse audiences, acting as an external spokesperson for Adult Programs when needed.

  • Oversees, writes, and edits promotional materials for print and the Web, and manages Adult Programs pages online.
  • Maintains knowledge of recent developments in the field by attending conferences, visiting museums to observe best practices, and communicating with regional and national colleagues.
  • Advocates for the Museum locally, nationally, and internationally with a high degree of integrity and professionalism.
  • Maintains open communication with senior management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education, Experience, and Certification: *

  • Masters Degree in Art History, Art Education, Studio Art, Education, or related field required and/or equivalent work experience
  • 6+ years' experience working in museums or cultural institutions; experience working with public programs or special events in a museum setting preferred
  • 2+ years' experience in people management and/or project management role

Key Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of learning styles, educational philosophy, teaching strategies, and multidisciplinary approaches in developing educational programming for adults.
  • Ability to develop strategic partnerships with artists, authors, speakers, community organizations, cultural institutions, and colleagues throughout the Museum.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Excellent written, organizational, interpersonal, speaking, and computer skills.
  • Proven track record supporting diverse constituencies and leading large- and small-scale events.
  • Experience developing relevant and responsive programs for diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to be an enthusiastic spokesperson for the Museum’s educational and programming efforts.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support program commitments.
