The Farm School Curricula and Guiding Beliefs
General
● We are working to further develop a community school in which students, families, teachers and community members take an interest in and ownership of student learning.
● We aim to build units that incorporate the natural ecosystems, businesses, history and rich culture of The Farm while also providing students with the opportunity to become
knowledgeable about a wide range of topics in science, social studies, world cultures and literature.
● We meet weekly, choose yearly personal professional development goals and use curricular resources that support best practices and current research in education.
● We value the inclusion of the arts, diverse perspectives, environmental stewardship, social consciousness and connection to nature at all grade levels.
● We believe in meeting students at their developmental and experiential levels and teaching reading, writing and math skills at these levels rather than strictly adhering to grade level expectations. This may include acceleration, modification or remediation of learning goals.
● We believe in high expectations as well as high support.
● We believe that building relationships is essential to a successful school experience and that open, respectful communication is always welcome.
● We embrace mistakes, messy learning experiences and intentional reflection.

Math
○ We believe that any student can learn math to a high level. There are many successful
approaches to learning each mathematical concept and a variety of tools students can
use to assist them in developing a deep conceptual understanding. We celebrate
communication, creativity and critical thinking in our study of mathematics.
○ We use a program called Tang Math. This is a web based program with the option to
print student worksheets and weekly challenge packs. The teacher has the option of
using ready-made slides to lead the students through the lesson or to watch a video of
the program’s author teaching each lesson before teaching it themselves.

● Science
○ Teachers have flexibility in choosing the activities they will use to teach the grade level standards. The curriculum director will provide options and support planning.
