The Department of Anesthesiology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist position.
Jobs in the Human Resources career family provide the management of human capital. Senior Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently.
Position Emphasis
The Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist, under direction from the People Operations Director, is primarily responsible for creating and implementing recognition, retention, and wellbeing policies, initiatives, and programs across the Department of Anesthesiology, to include the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology. Currently, the Department of Anesthesiology’s administrative team operates in a hybrid work model. New hires are required to work on-site full-time during a training period. Additionally, the Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist may be required to work at various sites across the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO, and the Denver Metro Area, when necessary.
Supervision Received
The Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist reports directly to the People Operations Director. The Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist is expected to work closely with and take direction from the Department Chair, Vice Chair and Associate Vice Chair of Faculty Development, Clinical Psychologist, and Vice Chair of Finance and Administration. The Engagement & Wellbeing Specialist will also coordinate with the Event & Communications Team and the Department’s Finance, Procurement, & Contracts Lead regarding rules, regulations, and directives related to events, purchases, and initiatives that promote engagement and wellbeing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with creating, defining, and executing an Engagement Vision and Strategy, outlining how to engage, support, and recognize employees to promote inclusion, job satisfaction, and retention across the Department. Ensure a multi-pronged approach of:
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Career Development
- Leadership Development
- Employee Journey/Experience
- Ensure alignment of the implementation of the Engagement Vision and Strategy across all areas of the Department
- Develop evaluative criteria to benchmark Engagement and gather data through surveys and other measures to adjust the Engagement Vision and Strategy and implementation of initiatives.
- Create retention, recognition, and wellbeing policies, in collaboration with appropriate leadership, faculty, and staff constituents, for approval and Department-wide implementation.
- Retention and recognition policies, programs, and processes will recognize and reward outstanding work, support, years of service, promotion, etc. for faculty and staff in all areas of the Department.
- Wellbeing policies, programs, and processes will enhance, integrate, and promote wellbeing initiatives that foster mental and physical individual and team wellbeing.
- Policies may also include processes for recognizing new hires and other events such as birthdays, work anniversaries, growing families, retirement, etc.
- Implement and maintain programs outlined in the retention, recognition, and wellbeing policies that are consistent, fair, creative, and compliant with University and CU Medicine policies and guidelines.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of annual budgets for Departmental recognition, retention, and wellbeing efforts.
- Represent the Department on task forces and committees as the Engagement Specialist and as requested by the People Operations Director
- Attend Department meetings and present data related to Engagement

Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in public administration, public policy, business, higher education administration, social sciences, behavioral sciences or a directly related field from an accredited institution
- Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
- Two (2) years of professional level experience developing, implementing, and/or improving processes related to employee recognition, retention, and/or wellbeing
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience creating, implementing, and/or leading employee-focused initiatives for retention, recognition, and/or wellbeing
- Experience working in academic medicine
- Experience writing and implementing policies and procedures
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Organizational skills with ability to plan and organize process needs and activities, establish work priorities, and provide follow-through to ensure completion of activities, both individually and assisting others with work tasks.
- Ability to understand and apply institutional requirements at the department level.
- Ability to communicate effectively with administrative personnel, physicians and other institutional stakeholders, prospective faculty, staff, and other constituents, in written communications and oral presentations.
- Interpersonal skills working with all levels of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in an environment of high volume and stress.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information.
- Independent judgment, critical thinking, analysis, and self-directed work.
- Demonstration of self-starting initiative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $51,283 - $65,232.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is eligible for overtime compensation.
