The Engineering Project Manager is responsible for leading and guiding engineering project teams to successfully achieve engineering project deliverables from project start to closure within the framework of a gated product development process. The Engineering Project Manager applies tools, techniques, knowledge, and skills to the engineering activities within a project in order to fulfill requirements.


Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide engineering project teams to successfully achieve project objectives with delivery dates that support current financial forecast.
  • Applies tools, techniques, knowledge, and skills to the engineering activities within a project in order to fulfill requirements.
  • Identifies the technical approach to be used on a given project and manages the system development process (Requirements, dFMEAs, DVP&Rs, etc.)
  • Direct the work of third-party engineering firms to coordinate in a partnership relationship joint development on Shyft offered solutions.
  • Effectively manage projects such that all requirements for Bill of Material cost, project development cost, schedule, scope and quality are being met related to engineering deliverables.
  • Track engineering team hours and cost allocations to individual projects to ensure quoted costs for the project are met.
  • Assure bill of material and design information produced by the group is complete, accurate, and on-time
  • Assure project timelines, test plans and project files are developed and tracked for all projects, and that engineering commitments are consistently met on-time.
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path.
  • Prioritize work to ensure tasks are completed in the correct sequence for project success.
  • Proactively manage obstacles both internal and external to the project in an organized and process driven fashion.
  • Establish and maintain project metrics related to engineering activities.
  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
  • Assure open engineering issues are tracked with action plans including timing and responsibility for containment and permanent resolution.
  • Support product launch schedule led by the program manager in collaboration with identified representatives from affected departments and suppliers (Including: Engineering, Purchasing, Finance, Manufacturing, and Customer Service at a minimum).
  • Follow established organization policies, processes, and practices.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities related to project management for multiple active projects with no detrimental impact to any individual project.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of the Engineering Project Management Model by drawing on experience and industry best practices to augment, refine and if necessary, create organizational polices, processes and practices.
  • Continuously foster and actively engage in behaviors which drive innovation.
  • Assure members of the project team are held accountable for both their job performance and behavior consistent with The Shyft Group’s Associates Handbook - including taking the necessary disciplinary action if required. (Engineers on the project report to their functional manager)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a project management capacity
  • Project Management Professions (PMP) preferred
  • Strong and consistent attention to detail
  • Sound judgment with the ability to make timely decisions
  • Proven ability to plan and handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated with the ability to stay on task
  • Versatile, flexible, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities

  • Experience with value stream mapping
  • Conflict resolution skills within functional team and outside vendors
