Functional Title: Eng Tech IV

Work Location: NBVC Port Hueneme, CA (PTMO)

Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Wage Rate: $36.11

Schedule: Alternative Work Schedule

The Engineering Technician IV performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed, selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents, receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed, performs recurring work independently. Work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions. This technician performs at this level one or a combination of such typical duties as:

  • Constructing components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Following specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Conducting various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement, selecting, preparing, and operating standard test equipment and records test data.
  • Extracting and compiling a variety of engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc., processing data, identifying errors or inconsistencies, selecting methods of data presentation.
  • Assisting in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; developing information concerning previous operational failures and modifications, and using judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.
Requirements:
  • Main duties will be serving as Ship’s Mate or Captain on one of any vessels in the contracts inventory, located at Point Hueneme, CA.
  • Additional duties to serve as captain/crew on vessels ranging from 24’ RHIBS to 264’ support vessels and targets, support towing operations, target recovery, and offshore navigation in accordance with USCG standards.
  • Directing daily vessel operations, scheduled and unscheduled vessel maintenance, workload, with operational and crew resource management.
  • Oversee the required USCG safety training / drills vessel, record keeping including running logs and trip reports.
  • Follow established preventative maintenance programs utilizing technical service manuals and schematic charts for marine engines and related marine equipment.

Work Conditions:

  • Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Outdoor duties may be performed on shore and afloat on even or uneven surfaces, which may be dry or wet.
  • Requires the ability to work in a seaborne environment with some shift work at remote locations with multiple over-night assignments.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Travel to remote working locations required and routine deployments on support and target vessels may be required, INCONUS and occasional OCONUS for mission support.
  • Overtime required at times to support operations.
  • Work Schedule currently is a 9/80 schedule (Mon – Thurs 9 hours, alternating Friday, 1 work 8 hrs. 1 off)

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Possess High School Diploma
  • Technical school training or specialized training in the appropriate field required, or a total of ten plus (10+) years’ experience in performing the above stated functions, may replace education.
  • Experience in a military environment (E-6+) or on a military facility preferred but not required.
  • Must possess a valid USCG Master Mariner credential, no less than 100GT – required, third issue preferred.
  • Working knowledge of crane, deck, and anchor winch operation operations - required.
  • Local knowledge of Southern California waters and coastal ports, with knowledge in military operations – required.
  • Ten years’ experience operating in the capacity of Master aboard commercial or military vessels serving the offshore industries of Southern California, preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge with generator systems and related marine auxiliary equipment, including hydraulics and electrical, desired.
  • Knowledge in performing mechanical repairs on Caterpillar engines, desired.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Positive customer service attitude.
  • Current US Driver License required; must be able to be insured through Company’s vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours, and for the duration of your work employment.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must obtain an U.S. DoD Security Interim Clearance prior to hire date, final clearance must be granted and clearance must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical to include: Physical, Drug Screen, Vision & Hearing testing, Medical Condition Certification and back x-ray.
