Job Summary:


The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Environmental Health and Safety Manager / Associate Facilities Program Coordinator. The successful candidate will:

  • Manage the documentation and tracking required for hazardous and universal waste management and disposal campus-wide.
  • Generate quarterly reports summarizing monthly waste disposal by type and volumes for presentation.
  • Coordinate and generate all the required reports and certification as mandated by regulatory agencies.
  • Act as the facility’s liaison with hazardous waste disposal companies, arranging for waste pick-up dates, supervising waste pick-up, etc.
  • Oversee the University Hospital Pharmaceutical Waste and Controlled Substances Disposal Program, providing full-time support and guidance to staff.
  • Effectively implement the Joint Commission Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Plan.
  • Act as the facility’s liaison for biological safety cabinet and fume hood certification, maintenance and repairs.
  • Regularly inspects campus facilities where hazardous waste is stored and evaluates compliance; tracks accumulation of satellite storage containers.
  • Compile and maintain list of hazardous waste requiring disposal and organizes the waste for transport and disposal.
  • Communicate the applicable requirements of legal mandates to faculty, managers and employees.
  • Administer the Laboratory Inspection program for all labs on campus.
  • Investigate injuries and exposures within the laboratories.
  • Investigate and responds to Indoor Air Quality complaints.
  • Participate as team member for Environmental Safety Rounds throughout University Hospital.
  • Participate as team member during IACUC and AAALAC inspections program.
  • Coordinate, purchase and distribute personal protective equipment as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and other campus needs throughout academic facilities.
  • Coordinate and conduct industrial hygiene and surveys utilizing testing equipment such as an indoor air quality monitor, digital pressure gauge, and microbial air sampler.
  • Manage exposure monitoring in research and clinical laboratory settings.
  • Administer hazardous waste, biosafety and chemical hygiene training for staff both in-person and via learning management system.
  • Maintain purchase orders for exposure sampling, hazardous waste disposal, laboratory clean outs and decontamination, mold abatements and certification of biological safety cabinets and fume hoods.
  • Participate as a volunteer member of the campus Emergency Response Team.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and PPE assessments as needed.
  • Attend departmental meetings, professional development courses; participates in committees (Radiation Safety, Environment of Care, Institutional Biosafety) and hospital/campus activities, as directed.
  • Assist with emergency response and responds to spills and leaks and assess potential hazards, as needed. Initiate monitoring and laboratory analysis, as required.
  • Coordinate or conduct, and update regulatory required environmental training of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University staff, including but not limited to, hazardous/universal waste, Regulated Medical Waste, RCRA, DOT, Pharmaceutical Waste, SPCC, and spill kit clean-up.
  • Assist with budgetary matters, contract drafting, processing of requisitions and purchase orders as needed
  • Be flexible and perform other related duties as assigned and as business needs warrant as the total responsibilities is not limited to the above job description.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Life Science or Environmental Science.
  • 3 to 5 years of related environmental health and safety experience in Environmental/Industrial Hygiene, Hazardous Waste Management, and research and clinical lab environments.
  • US RCRA/DOT certification.
  • Must be self-motivated, a pro-active thinker, and customer service oriented.
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess great attention to detail, work with accuracy and efficiency, multi-task, prioritize duties, and ability to problem-solve.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in Hospital Regulatory compliance.
  • Masters Degree in Safety, Life Science or Environmental Science.


Work Schedule:


Variable Days; 9:00am to 5:00pm

SL-4

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
