Weld County Public Health and Environment (Greeley, CO) is recruiting for an Environmental Health Specialist I.

Weld County Public Health and Environment (Greeley, CO) is searching for an Environmental Health Specialist. The position will primarily support the consumer protection program (retail food and childcare inspections), but will have opportunity to be engaged in other programs within the Environmental Health Services Division. This position performs technical environmental health inspections and investigations and makes recommendations regarding correction of specific non-compliance conditions. Enforces Colorado and Weld County environmental health-related laws and regulations.

Normal work hours are Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm. However, work may be required outside of these days and/or hours.

$31.70 - $40.18 per hour plus benefits (see benefits tab on the job posting). The position will normally start at $31.70 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Conduct inspections and investigate the sanitary conditions for compliance for facilities and operations, such as: food service establishments, grocery stores, child and health care facilities, jails, body art facilities, solid waste landfills, injection wells, waste tire facilities, on-site wastewater treatment systems, air pollution emission sources, etc. The following activities may be conducted within the inspection program:

Enforce State and Weld County laws and regulations and initiate appropriate legal action under the direction of the supervisor.

Investigate complaints and determine validity. Conduct investigation in conjunction with local, State and Federal agencies. May assist in the investigation of communicable disease outbreaks.

Perform field sample collection, including but not limited to, samples for the determination of water supply potability, wastewater discharges, air quality, potential food-borne illness, etc. Utilize technical equipment in the course of routine inspections.

Collect, create, and analyze data concerning environmental health-related issues. May analyze data to assess public health impacts, establish standards, and develop approaches for control of health hazards.

Write summary reports and appropriate correspondence.

Complete assigned work and duties in a timely and professional manner. Employs appropriate guidelines or regulations. Majority of workload fits within normal bounds. Supervisor/senior staff more regularly involved in decision making.

Efficiently use County resources and work to implement changes that increases efficiencies within the department.

Understand and work to ensure that County, department and division mission statements, visions, goals are met.

Use exceptional customer service skills to respond to community needs, enhance public relations, coordinate activities, and represent the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment in order to promote and maintain a positive public health image and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.

Maintain current licenses and certifications. Update program information and protocol by attending continuing education courses related to program responsibilities. Keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to the job. Complete position-specific training for public health emergency response activities. Acquire and retain knowledge of policies, procedures, and various local, State and Federal regulations related to various Health Department programs.

Have a strong working knowledge of computer programs used on a daily basis such as electronic health records, program specific software applications, Microsoft Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Visio and OneDrive, database user interface and query software (client databases), and web browser software.

Maintain sensitive and confidential records information. Follow the Weld County Code of Conduct and adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, including HIPAA, and the appropriate non-disclosure and/or release of information.

Receive and process household hazardous waste from customers. Prepare HHW for pickup by contractors. Lift and transport wastes from customer vehicles. Complete required reports and paperwork.

At times, expected to work evenings and weekends. Performs on-call duty on a rotating basis with other Environmental Health staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, environmental health or closely related field. Preferably experience in public health.

A combination of education and appropriate environmental health experience may be considered.

A Masters degree may be substituted for experience.

LICENSE, VEHICLE & INSURANCE:

A valid driver's license and use of personal, insured vehicle is required to perform job duties. Dependable transportation and auto insurance, maintained at all times, as required by State law, is required.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:

Candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles.

This position may involve driving for extended distances and periods of time throughout Weld County in all weather conditions typical in Colorado throughout the year.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
