Job description
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Composition Department beginning in the 2023-24 academic year.
We seek a dynamic composer who is on a path to an active career, nationally and internationally, and who shares Oberlin’s commitment to the highest standards in undergraduate musical and liberal arts training. Applicants are sought with additional areas of interest and expertise that might include electro-acoustic music, song-writing, film-scoring, improvisation, and other realms of musical activity.
About
The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, composition, electronic and computer music, jazz, music history, and historical performance. The Conservatory also offers Performance and Artist Diplomas in performance areas, an Artist Diploma in Piano Technology, and a postgraduate program in Recording and Audio Production.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will teach composition to individual students, help run the weekly Composition Forum, and teach core composition courses such as instrumentation, orchestration, counterpoint, and composition for non-majors, as well as advanced seminars on special topics relating to the applicant’s areas of interest and expertise.
Additional duties include recruiting and serving an active role in program development and curriculum design, in collaboration with Contemporary Music Division colleagues.
Qualifications
An advanced degree in composition is desired but not necessary if an applicant has outstanding professional recognition as composer.
