The Virginia Fair Housing Office at The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation ( DPOR ) is seeking a Fair Housing Investigator. The Fair Housing Investigator is responsible for conducting accurate and detailed investigations providing information that enables the fact finder to make an informed decision about the merits of a fair housing complaint. Conducting effective, efficient, and timely investigations requires the investigator to be proactive, resourceful, diligent, creative, detailed, and insightful. This position will conduct and conclude investigations within established timeframes; prepare reports that are well written, objective, organized, logical and free of errors; attend Fair Housing Board meetings and Real Estate Board meetings as necessary and assist with the presentation of cases at Board meetings; and actively participate in staff discussions, committees, and meetings to present cases and discuss analysis of facts and board recommendations. The Fair Housing Investigator is required to reside within the Central Region of Virginia and will need to occasionally travel overnight to investigate cases throughout Virginia.

The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state law and regulations. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. DPOR supports Virginia’s economic vitality by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of DPOR policies and procedures and the Virginia Fair Housing Law and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of HUD’s investigative procedures.
  • Ability to conduct thorough investigations.
  • Ability to research, apply analytical skills and summarize evidence and information and to apply the law and regulations to the facts.
  • Ability to prepare Final Investigative Reports, Case Analysis and Recommendations and other official correspondence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, word processing skills and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple schedules, priorities, tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to interact with the public, staff and Board members.
  • Ability to gather evidence and information from parties whose interests are perceived to be adverse.
  • Leadership qualities including being proactive, creative, team oriented, diligent and detailed.

  • Ability to investigate cases in the regions of Central, Southwest and Tidewater Virginia and occasionally travel overnight throughout the State.
  • Driver’s License required
  • Investigator is required to reside within the Central region of the State.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of college level education or equivalent experience preferred
  • Bilingual skills preferred
