Agroforestry Farm Manager
Bluming Fields Farm is a 150-acre farm based in Kerhonkson, NY. The farm is seeking an experienced farmer/forester to oversee and lead farm operations, focused on agroforestry, horse boarding, and solar. This opportunity will allow for you to work on new types of agroforestry practices and provide creativity and strong leadership.
Position
We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate farmer that wants to take on a long-term initiative, can learn quickly, and manage multiple workstreams in tandem. The Agroforestry Farm Manager will have 5+ years experience in running a prior agroforestry project. The farm has several ongoing projects that will fall under this person’s responsibility, including managing existing forest in collaboration with the USDA and DEC, defining a comprehensive agroforestry plan, sourcing materials and short-term staff (when needed), caring for horses being boarded on the property, helping to coordinate with a solar team adding a 15 acre array to the property, and overseeing an airBnB on the property.
This is a full-time position offering a salary between $52,000 and $60,000, free housing on the farm, a 10% profit share from operations, and health benefits.
This will be the first growing season for this operation and will, potentially, include growing maple, cedar, chestnut, oak trees, pawpaws, and ginseng, alongside sheep, chickens, and/or cattle.
Description
Seed starting: working with growing media, seed selection & supply, crop planning, planting, pest and disease control, direct seeding, hardening off.
Soil prep: Broad-forking, tilling, composting, soil amendment, fertilizing, water and pest management, cover cropping, row covering, drainage, PH management.
Planting: inter-planting, succession scheduling and planting, thinning, crop rotation, crop protection, companion planting.
Orchard: tree pruning, organic pest management, orchard maintenance.
Farm Infrastructure and Maintenance: Water systems, fencing and netting, row cover and hoops, edging and weeding, equipment and tool maintenance, building maintenance, land clearing, drainage systems, support systems, sales and small ag. business systems.
Vertical Integrations: Monetizing small farm business
Property Management: Managing airBNB
Equine Management: Feeding and tending to horses
Experience
