City of Vista's Fire Department is seeking a motivated individual with excellent customer service and public relation skills to join the fire prevention team. The purpose of this position is to safeguard the public health, safety, and welfare of the community. THE POSITION:
Under general supervision, a Fire Inspector inspects institutions and industrial, commercial and residential properties, as well as places of public assemblage, to determine compliance with appropriate fire prevention codes, regulations, and standards; conducts training sessions for the public in fire prevention; investigates the origin of fires; and performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in fire investigation, fire prevention, plan checking, hazardous materials or a closely related field and experience performing fire prevention or fire investigation work.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
- A valid California Class "C" Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
- A valid CPR Certificate must be obtained and maintained as a condition of employment (training and certification can be done in-house).
- Certification of successful completion of Peace Officer's Course P.C. 832 is desirable.
Local, state and federal laws, codes and ordinances pertaining to fire safety and enforcement including California Health and Safety Code, CCR Titles 19 and 24, California Building Code, California Fire code, NFPA Standards and Codes ; Modern fire investigation methods and techniques; Fire behavior and chemistry; Fire inspection and educational methods used in fire prevention; Storage and handling requirements for hazardous materials, such as gasoline, chemicals, explosives, paints, gases and other flammables; Public speaking and public relations techniques; Basic mathematics; Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
SKILL IN:
Using a camera to record incident scene evidence; Operating a vehicle while observing legal and defensive driving practices.
ABILITY TO:
Exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision; Communicate effectively with the public; Apply laws, ordinances and regulations to situations of potential fire and life hazards with consistency, firmness and tact; Maintain accurate records; Read, understand, and apply technical documents; Act quickly in an emergency and adopt an effective course of action; Develop and administer a public fire prevention educational program; Analyze facilities and recommend effective fire safety measures; Speak clearly and concisely; Write clear, concise, and comprehensive reports; Conduct thorough fire investigations; Conduct thorough fire prevention and safety inspections; Read blueprints; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively verbally and in a written manner; observe and interpret data, and analyze and solve problems. The employee must be able to work indoor office environments/outdoor in the field environments (depending on position); Working conditions include exposure to heat, smoke, dust, fumes, inclement weather, and hazardous materials; must be willing to comply with rules and regulations governing work attire. The employee may have to move up to 50 lbs. and transport up to 10 lbs. objects frequently (depending on position). Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to detect, determine, perceive, identify, estimate, and assess work related objects and/or work products based on position specific designated tasks. The employee will be required to work a rotational schedule (currently one (1) week every three (3) weeks), and may be required to work overtime to complete assignments. Use of personal vehicle during employment may also be required. This position also requires travel within and out of the City to attend meetings.

SICK LEAVE
Sick leave is earned at the rate of 1 hour per every 21.66 hours worked, with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS
Employees working the 9/80 flex schedule are entitled to 99 hours of holiday leave per fiscal year.
