Job description
Aeriz is seeking a part-time Food Scientist to join our corporate R&D team. The Food Scientist will play a pivotal role in driving product innovation and development of Aeriz’s portfolio of cannabis-infused edibles. Our ideal candidate has significant experience with R&D in confectionery products and collaborating effectively with leadership and operations.
This role will report directly to Director of Manufacturing at our corporate office in Chicago. The estimated work hours will be 15-20 hours per week, increasing to 20-25 hours per week in the later stages of product development.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise product development stages using scientific methods, coordinating and conducting formulations, trials, and evaluations.
- Perform shelf life and stability, product performance, sensory evaluation, and quality attributes testing.
- Interpret data from findings and draft data-driven strategies and decisions.
- Document and maintain complete and accurate records.
- Perform lab setup and shutdown per standard operating procedures (SOP).
- Screen and manage vendors and suppliers for function and cost efficiency, sourcing ingredients and documentation needed for formulation development and prototyping.
- Offer ingredient recommendations and ideas.
- Prepare samples and prototypes for internal demonstrations and training.
- Manage trials and product start-ups, meeting the criteria for product and package design.
- Operate pilot equipment for testing and trials to help the operations team meet product commercialization timelines and schedules.
- Maintain effective and consistent professional communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams to fulfill project objectives.
- Identify root-cause analysis and implement corrective action.
- Prepare and present technical reports.
- Execute experiments based on project objectives.
- Meet project objectives and deadlines, having the flexibility and the adaptability to pivot on project needs and deliverables when required.
- Maintaining proper sanitation for equipment and work areas.
- Comply and enforce all rules and regulations set by federal, state, and local regulatory bodies, including all food industry standards and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in food science or related field required.
- 3 years of experience in food production R&D and/or food product development required.
- Experience with confectionery products (gummies, hard candies, chocolate, etc.) preferred.
- Cannabis extracts, infusion techniques, and/or edibles production is a plus.
- Occasional travel our facilities in Phoenix, AZ; Anna, IL; and Riverbank, CA.
- Strong understanding of food industry standards and regulations regarding quality and safety.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Familiarity with project management and scheduling.
- Genuine interest, appreciation, and passion for the cannabis industry and consumers.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for a distance of 100 feet.
- Must be 21 years of age or older and authorized to work in the United States.
- Able to successfully register as an agent in state’s cannabis commission.
- Must adhere to all laws, regulations, and policies associated with the industry.
