The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Materials and Research, has a full-time vacancy for a Geological Exploration Technician Trainee, I, II.
SUMMARY:
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN TRAINEE: D uring a training period, to learn the work of a Geological Exploration Technician I and assist other Geological Exploration staff in the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of test boring and other equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data for the design and construction of NHDOT projects.
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN I: T o perform skilled work in assisting other Geological Exploration staff in the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of test boring and other equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data for the design and construction of NHDOT projects.
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN II: T o perform skilled work in the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of test boring and other equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data for the design and construction of NHDOT projects.
M INIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN TRAINEE:
E ducation: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.
E xperience: One (1) year of work experience preferably including three months in the operation of light or heavy motor-driven equipment or machinery. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
L icense/Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with air brakes OR obtain such licensure prior to completion of the one year probationary period. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
S PECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 . Must receive a negative result on pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements.
2 . For promotion from Geological Exploration Technician Trainee, labor grade 7 to Geological Exploration Technician I, labor grade 9, employees must:
a . Meet the minimum qualification requirements of Geological Exploration Technician I
b . Receive satisfactory annual performance evaluations
c . Be recommended for promotion by supervisor(s).
3 . M ust work out of a hotel or other similar lodging when project is deemed too far to commute from Concord.
4 . A ll accountabilities must be conducted in full conformance with all risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.

E xperience: Two years of experience in the operation of light or heavy motor-driven equipment or machinery, one year of which must have been in the operation of excavation or earth drilling equipment. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
L icense/Certification: Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with air brakes. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
S PECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN TRAINEE:
T rains while assisting other Geological Exploration staff in all aspects of mobilizing, operating, repairing, and maintaining test boring and other equipment, and in performing subsurface explorations in accordance with standard procedures.
O perates heavy vehicles to move test boring equipment to and around the work site.
L earns how to mobilize test boring equipment in areas of difficult access such as wet areas, adjacent to or in roadways, and on steep hillsides.
L earns how to set up, maintain, and remove work zone traffic control devices and perform flagging according to standard procedures in or adjacent to roadways.
L earns how to take undisturbed samples of cohesive soils, perform field vane shear tests, and install geotechnical instrumentation and groundwater monitoring wells.
L earns how to keep an accurate and complete field log of each exploration including soil classification, bedrock information, groundwater measurements, and other pertinent information as required.
O perates water pumps, generators, chain saws, and other power equipment used for mobilization to and conduct of subsurface explorations.
G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN I:
A ssists other Geological Exploration staff in all aspects of mobilizing, operating, repairing, and maintaining test boring and other equipment, and in performing subsurface explorations in accordance with standard procedures.
O perates heavy vehicles to move test boring equipment to and around the work site.
A ssists in the mobilization of test boring equipment in areas of difficult access such as wet areas, adjacent to or in roadways, and on steep hillsides.

G EOLOGICAL EXPLORATION TECHNICIAN II:
A ssists a Geological Exploration Technician III in all aspects of mobilizing, operating, repairing, and maintaining subsurface exploration equipment including: portable, truck, trailer, track, or skid mounted drill rigs, and in performing subsurface explorations in accordance with standard procedures. Assumes the duties of the Geological Exploration Technician III in his/her absence.
O perates backhoe equipment for shallow explorations and to assist in the mobilization of off-road drilling equipment, including localized snow removal.
O perates heavy vehicles to move test boring and other equipment to and around the work site.
A ssists in the mobilization of test boring equipment in areas of difficult access such as wet areas, adjacent to or in roadways, and on steep hillsides.
S ets up, maintains, and removes work zone traffic control devices and performs flagging according to standard procedures in or adjacent to roadways.
A ssists in taking undisturbed samples of cohesive soils, performing field vane shear tests, and installing geotechnical instrumentation and groundwater monitoring wells.
K eeps an accurate and complete field log of each exploration including soil classification, bedrock information, groundwater measurements, and other pertinent information as required.
P repares daily work summary reports, vehicle cost reports, time sheets, and expense sheets to assure proper project cost accounting.
O perate water pumps, generators, chain saws and other power equipment used for mobilization to and conduct of subsurface explorations.
