Job description
The Graduate Assistant/Hall Advisor at NVU-Johnson is responsible for the coordination of all programs and functions for their designated residence hall(s) (100-200 students), including all duties necessary for administration of the hall(s) as part of the academic system and appropriate to the educational philosophy of Northern Vermont University and the Office of Student Life.
Responsibilities:
- Manage residence hall(s) housing 100-200 students.
- Supervise an undergraduate Resident Assistant staff of up to six or seven. This includes weekly evening staff meetings and regular individual meetings.
- Maintain consistent availability through posted office hours.
- Participate in a weekly on-call duty rotation, including weekend and evening duty coverage.
- Monitor social well-being of students in residence.
- Ensure a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment to the greatest degree possible.
- Enforce University policy and Code of Conduct when necessary. At times, this may include support for conduct issues at the Apartments complex.
- Develop and oversee dynamic, educational programming consistent with the department's themes and learning outcomes.
- Actively promote Vermont State University's values and mission.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with various departments on campus.
- Assist in all aspects of Residence Life and Housing as directed. Hall Advisors assist with administrative tasks in conduct, housing assignments, and programming on a regular basis.
- Assist with housing unit inspections at move-in and move-out, including both the Residence Halls and Apartments Complex.
Minimum Qualifications:
Eligibility for acceptance to a Vermont State University graduate school program for 2023-2024 Academic Year. Current applicants to the program are welcome to apply for the assistantship, but MUST be accepted in order to be offered the Hall Advisor role.
Preferred Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or a related field is desirable.
- Experience supervising college-age people in a work environment is highly desirable.
- Understanding of adult learning and basic lifespan development, particularly with a multicultural perspective, is highly desirable.
VSC Non-Bargaining Unit; Part-Time Temporary; 10 months; approximately 25 hours per week; non-exempt
This is a live-in position (unfurnished residence hall apartment) with weekend, evening, and holiday on-call responsibilities. Work schedule can be variable depending on on-call workload.
Compensation: $6000 academic year stipend; 18 credits of tuition remission (per fiscal year). Unfurnished apartment within Residence Hall, a university meal plan, and partial VTSU student insurance coverage.
