United Way for Greater Austin is a regional organization, and this role may be responsible for supporting our regional projects and initiatives.
What we want:
The Grants Director will manage the entire grants portfolio, including private and public funders. The Grants Director will collaborate across teams with finance, programs, and human capital to raise both unrestricted and restricted funding to advance United Way’s mission and impact in the Central Texas region. The Grants Director will oversee and manage critical grants pre-award functions such as identification, assessment, relationship development and management, proposal development, and stewardship.

What you’ll bring:
  • Works closely with CEO, CDO, program directors, finance team, and COO to identify service and program needs and develop an annual plan for submitting grant proposals from appropriate funding sources
  • Works with program staff to develop grant goals and reasonable outputs and outcomes
  • Compiles, writes, and edits all grant applications in coordination with appropriate United Way staff, exhibiting superior writing skills and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Provides appropriate grant summary reports to CDO, Program Directors, Chief Financial Officer, CEO, and the Resource Development Committee
  • Schedules and leads regular grant project team meetings
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with key funders and foundations
  • Tracks information on current and prospective funding sources, including funder guidelines, proposals, report deadlines, and the names of trustees, officers, and key decision-makers
  • Responsible for pre-award administration of federal, state, and private grants
  • Identifies, researches, and develops federal, state, and private grant funding sources and communicates those opportunities to appropriate leadership
  • Evaluates and track federal, state, and local funding opportunities
  • Gather and maintain information on local, state, and national trends and statistics related to United Way’s focus areas and programs
  • Maintains and analyzes background data on current and prospective grantors from various information sources, including in-house records, publications, directories, online databases, and individuals
  • Completes grant files on all proposal submissions and outcomes
  • For proposals not funded, including reasons for denial and recommendations for future submissions
  • Assists in annual planning by submitting budgets and revenue projections before each fiscal year
  • In addition to planning, assisting in developing and finalizing yearly projections.
  • Create numbers based on plans and goals for the next fiscal year, not just a flat percentage increase
  • Provides updates monthly to CDO, Development team, and Resource Development Committee
  • Focuses on setting goals around foundation and government grants, providing data updates during the year for each goal
  • Partners with the development team to determine the best strategies for effectively stewarding constituent groups.
  • Collaborate with grants staff to ensure that stewardship of appropriate groups is being implemented as planned, which includes the execution of the written stewardship plan and processes for tracking stewardship tasks and initiatives
  • Keeps in contact with grant-making organizations while reviewing a submitted grant application to supply additional supportive material
What you’ll bring:
  • A Passion for our Central Texas regional community and a desire to make a real impact
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 5+ years of experience working in a non-profit
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and strategies is required
  • Experience in government grant acquisition preferred
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or another CRM software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google suite
  • Proficiency in managing meetings virtually, through Zoom, or similar platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; ability to operate professionally under various working conditions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities

This position is located in Austin, Texas, and reports directly to the Chief Development Officer.
