PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties related to the upkeep of campus grounds, outdoor walkways, patios, signs, irrigation systems and athletic facilities in a college setting. Establish and maintain a variety of plant life. Use and maintain all related grounds-keeping equipment. Maintain grounds in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Mow lawns; rake leaves; sweep walkways, plant, cultivate, fertilize, prune, trim and otherwise maintain lawns, flowers, ground covers, shrubs and trees.
- Utilize powered blowers, lawn mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers and other powered equipment.
- Under limited and close supervision, apply weed control chemicals. Assist in removal and disposal of carcasses in accordance with safety procedures.
- Maintain equipment. Clean and maintain all non-powered equipment.
- Remove and dispose of trash and other debris throughout campus daily.
- Maintain inventory of all assigned tools, supplies, and equipment.
- Participate in composting and mulching activities, as needed.
- Participate in marking of athletics fields.
- Report irrigation, planting, and or tree care as needed which is beyond the regular duty capacity.
- Actively participate in working four mandatory weekends which include, Orientation (Late August), Family Weekend (Mid-February), Reunion Weekend (End of April), and Commencement (Mid May).
- Be prepared to work in inclement weather.
- Be prepared to work evening shift when necessary and or during emergency situations for protection of the campus and or community.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
- Ability to learn proper use of fire extinguishers.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance, climb ladders up to twenty feet with assistance and up to ten feet unassisted, and be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to effectively and efficiently clean and maintain an assigned area within a predetermined time schedule.
- Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directions in English.
- Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues within and outside Grounds department.
- Ability to work well without continuous supervision.
- Must wear uniforms and safety equipment as required.
- Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
Minimum of three year's employment experience in grounds-keeping assignments.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES:
Requires a valid California Driver's License and maintaining a driving record acceptable to the Colleges' insurance carrier.
Your position requires you to drive on behalf of the College. Your motor vehicle record will be reviewed at least annually. You must meet minimum driving criteria as required to perform you job duties which include: hold a valid driver’s license in good standing with your current state of residence; Motor vehicle records (MVR) must meet and remain acceptable according to the MVR eligibility criteria established by Scripps insurance company. You must the Office of Human Resources immediately if you no longer meet the requirements above.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a regular, full-time, 12 month, benefits-eligible, non-exempt level position.
The regular hours for this position are Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department.
Four mandatory weekends and some evening shifts as required by college venues.
Hourly rate range: $17.75-$18.95. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None.

Sitting in a normal seated position and/or walking for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using gardening equipment. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to fix irrigation components. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 50 lbs., for example, to lift or move supplies, such as, fertilizer bags.
