Agency Information: Founded in 1866, Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide Medical Support Services in a timely, efficient manner, to assist the physician’s in the treatment of the Kansans we serve. The primary purpose is to provide phlebotomy services to Osawatomie State Hospital. This position is essential to provide coverage for Medical Support Services (Ancillary Services) to meet requirements set forth in the performance of moderated and waived test complexities of a C.L.I.A. certified laboratory. This position additionally provides clerical and supportive services to medical practitioners (Physical Therapist and Dentist) or services (Radiology & ECG) that provide services at Osawatomie State Hospital. ECGs are transmitted and over read by a contracted Cardiology Group.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Medical Support Services:
Collects and prepares human samples for analysis. Specimens may include blood, urine, sputum, feces, exudates, secretions, and other body fluids. Employs knowledge of samples volume, special handling, tube preparation, and appropriate anticoagulants. Stores and transports specimens using appropriate preservation methods. This is essential for quality specimens to assure quality results.
Provides phlebotomy service at Osawatomie State Hospital.
Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and documents those actions on all equipment utilized to perform testing to assure the integrity of equipment.
Recognizes and corrects basic equipment malfunctions.
Performs Quality Control for testing assigned to assure the accuracy of the testing completed.
Informs Chief Medical Physician of any problems identified.
Communicates to the physicians and / or their designee panic (life threatening) values to assure prompt treatment of patients.
Maintains a clean and organized work area. Adheres to Infection Control and Safety Practices to help provide a safe work environment.
Utilizes the Laboratory Information System to order testing per physician orders, generate billing reports, pre-order forms, and daily worksheets for each section of the laboratory.
ECG Service:
Performs Diagnostic testing to include ECG’s and Reports results to the Medical Staff for assessment of their patient.
Communicates to the physicians and / or their designee panic (life threatening) values to assure prompt treatment of patients.
Transmits ECG tracings to contract cardiologist for over read.
Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and documents those actions on all equipment utilized to perform testing to assure the integrity of equipment. Recognizes and corrects basic equipment malfunctions.
Physical Therapy:
Assists Physical Therapist with scheduling, maintaining supplies, cleaning, equipment maintenance, data entry of billing and filing.
Radiology Services:
Processes Physicians’ orders, schedules, billing, and escorts patients for testing.
Dental Services:
Schedules patient appointments for dental services
Cleans and sterilizes dental equipment.
Orders and maintains adequate Dental supplies.
Performs cleaning and preventative maintenance of equipment.
Data entry of billing for services.
Gathers and submits PI Data for Medical Support Services as assigned in a timely manner.
Other:
Completes competency requirements for all medical support services by the end of each rating period. Demonstrates knowledge, skill, and abilities to work with all ages of the hospital patients.
Other duties as required.
EQ/Flexibility – An adequate ability to adjust emotions, thoughts, and behavior to changing situations and conditions.
The incumbent of this position has authorized access or the potential of incidental exposure to Protected Health Information (PHI) under the provisions of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule. PHI must be treated in accordance with the provisions of HIPAA Privacy regulation including the requirements for safeguarding, releasing and recording the release of such information. The incumbent has been trained in the provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Regulation as they relate to the duties.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Licensing & Certification: N/A
Minimum Qualifications: Experience – one year experience in healthcare related field, such as phlebotomy, direct care, and or waived testing. Experience in Phlebotomy; performance of ECG tracings; radiology; performance of waived testing; and knowledge of computers and information systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
Phlebotomy Training and/or Medical Assistant Training is preferred.
Knowledge and ability to operate the following equipment:
Personal Computer – daily Centrifuges – daily
Telephone – daily ECG equipment - weekly
Fax – daily Steam Sterilizer – 2 days per week
Copier – daily Hot/Cold Packs - 3 days per week
Calculator – daily Whirlpool – 3 days per week
Laboratory Information System – daily
Blood glucose monitoring system – daily
