This position is with the Discipline Unit located at Department of Corrections Headquarters’ in Richmond, Virginia.

The Legal Services and Hearings Officer assists the Manager of the Discipline Unit in ensuring the proper administration of Inmate disciplinary procedures in DOC facilities. Assists in providing technical assistance via e-mail, correspondence, and phone to operations staff on a daily basis. Assists in the monitoring and analysis of appeal referrals, processing incoming and outgoing mail, and entering data into the Disciplinary Appeals database. Assists in reviewing and drafting disciplinary appeal responses for each Regional Administrator’s review and signature. Assists in maintaining and tracking all incoming Disciplinary Appeals; filing and maintaining completed Disciplinary Appeal packets for litigation purposes; conducting training as needed and conducting site visits as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Experience coordinating administrative functions in corrections or a similar large business or agency. Prior experience with administrative hearings or knowledge of administrative law and due process. Working knowledge of state and federal laws, ACA standards, and DOC Directives and Operating Procedures related to Inmate discipline. Demonstrated ability to analyze and apply rules and regulations to evaluate evidence. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments at a time. Exceptional organizational skills. Ability to communicate effective orally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer post secondary courses in criminal justice, public administration, a similar field, or equivalent applicable experience and/or training.
