By joining our Equipment Section as a Highway Equipment Operator, you’ll operate various pieces of heavy equipment, haul heavy equipment and supplies statewide with semi truck and trailer, remove salvage parts, prepare equipment.

By joining our Equipment Section as a Highway Equipment Operator, you’ll operate various pieces of heavy equipment, haul heavy equipment and supplies statewide with semi truck and trailer, remove salvage parts, prepare equipment.
Holders of this Job Title will complete tasks such as:
- Operates road tractor and various trailers to move heavy equipment and supplies statewide. Operates heavy equipment safely and timely in the completion of loading and unloading equipment and supplies. Drives tractor/trailer to move heavy equipment and supplies statewide.
- Operates heavy equipment such as excavator, grader, front-end loaders, dump trucks, etc.
- Maintains equipment lots including grading, plowing and repairing drainage issues. Reviews facility fencing to ensure lot is secured.
- Prepares surplus equipment for sale and auction. Removes parts from salvage equipment. Maintains and provides basic service on assigned equipment.
- Will learn to operate various hand tools
- Will learn how to identify various parts for customers
- Will learn how to prepare surplus equipment for sale and/or auction

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of experience in the operation of equipment including two years of experience in the operation of intermediate equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, grader, tandem truck, tow paver, or hydro seeder.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A Heavy Equipment Training certificate from a technical school or vocational school will substitute for one year of the required experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class A commercial driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Applicants for employment with the Transportation Cabinet must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class A commercial driver's license with tank vehicle endorsement prior to employment in this job classification. http://transportation.ky.gov/driverlicensing/. Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
