Summary

Tri State Hindu Temple and Cultural Center has an open position for a Hindu Priest. Interested candidates should submit a detailed resume/CV, two letters of recommendation, and any other pertinent documents by email or regular mail before January 12, 2023.

Tri State Hindu Temple is a 501(c)(3) certified organization located in Newburgh, IN, USA. There is currently a Head Priest in the Temple. This is a second position as an Associate Priest, who will work closely with the current priest. The Temple currently houses the following deities: black granite idols of Shiva (Shiva Lingam), Ganapathi, Venkateswara Swamy, Karthikeya, Saraswathi, Dattatreya, Panchamukha Hanuman, Navagrahas; marble idols of Ram Parivar, Radha Krishna, Durga Mata and Mahavir-Jain Murtis; Utsava Murtis of Ganesha, Siva, Parvathi, Vishnu, Mahalakshmi and Ram Parivar.

The Tri State area is home to around 600 Hindu families, and they have recently completed construction of a new building, displaying traditional Indian architecture. The Tri State area offers a family friendly community with low cost of living, mild winters, local universities, and strong school systems including several options for public, private, charter and parochial schools. The riverfront and surrounding areas offer several new public parks and walking/biking trails. The community is a growing one with robust health care systems, a large state of the art stadium for musical performances, entertainment and sports, and convention centers. Several international corporations have local headquarters in the area in fields of engineering, pharmaceuticals, plastics, aluminum, car manufacturing and nutrition.

Job Qualifications-Required

• Must be qualified as a Hindu Priest with certifications from a well reputed Vedic institution with proficiency in Agama and Vedic Rituals

• 2+ years of experience (In USA, India or other countries) working in a temple after attending a religious based school

• Ability to communicate in English is required. Ability to also communicate in other Indian languages, especially south Indian, is desirable.

• Position requires the priest to be located within a 30 minute radius from the Temple. The priest must be self-sufficient in terms of being able to commute to and from the Temple.

• While proficiency in South Indian poojas and rituals is required, the priest must be open and inclusive to all cultures and deities and not have any inhibitions in terms of performing rituals. To this end, familiarity with a wide variety of skills across different sampradayas is desirable.

• Ability to perform the following functions in the Temple: abhishekam of various deities, homam, alankaram, utsavam with confidence

• Ability to perform special ceremonies, including but not limited to, wedding, baby shower, naming ceremony, aksharabhayasam, mundan ceremony, shashti poorthi, sahasra chandra darshanam

• Ability to perform religious services and poojas, including but not limited to, daily/nitya pooja, vahana pooja, Satyanarayana vratha pooja, Griha Pravesh, Sri Sudarshana havan/homam, Devi pooja

• Experience in vishesha poojas such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Sri Rama Navami, Sri Krishna Janmashtami and Sri Devi Navaratri poojas

• Familiarity in conducting kalyanam services such as Sri Parvathi Kalyanam, Sri Sita Rama Kalyanam, Sri Srinivasa Kalyanam, Sri Goda/Sri Andal Kalyanam to name a few

• Experience with Homams such as Maha Ganpathi, Sri Rudra, Sri Gayathri, Sri Chandi & Vaastu and different shanthi poojas like Navagraha, Bhoomi, Graha and Tithi shanthi pooja

• Skilled in parayan of, but not limited to, Suprabhatam, Vishnu Sahasaranam, Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam, and Shri Hanuman Chalisa

Job Qualifications-Desired

• Ability to communicate in Hindi

• Familiarity with deity decorations, especially Moola & Utsav Murthy(s)

• Ability of religious/devotional cooking skills to prepare/cook naivedhyam/bhog on a daily basis or as required by temple festivals/poojas/religious celebrations

• Ability to chant Thiruppavai, Thiruvempavai and Thiruvachakam

• Familiarity with Karwa Chauth, Chaath puja rituals, festivals like Lohri/Bhogi to name a few.

• Ability to perform shraddha and cremation ceremonies

• Ability to sing and play musical instruments for bhajans

Job Description

• To meet the Temple community’s devotional and spiritual needs, the priest will be required to perform Hindu Vedic rituals/ceremonies and other priestly duties as approved by the management at the Temple and other places where the management requests to perform (e.g. other temples, devotee’s residence, business). While the primary objective is conducting poojas and rituals in the Temple, the priest may be called to help with devotee needs within the greater Tri-State Area.

• Daily - pooja and alankaram to all deities
• Weekly - abhishekam
• Monthly - special pooja for Prathosham, Ekathasi, Sankatahar Chaturthi, Sashti, etc.
• Yearly - perform pooja for major festivals such as Diwali, Navarathri, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc.

• Perform other administrative duties as assigned

• Maintain the idols and the inside of the Garbhagrihas

• Work in concert with the current Head Priest in fulfilling these duties

Salary and Benefits

• Will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience

• Tri State Hindu Temple may sponsor an R1 Visa for the selected candidate for self and family subject to approval by the management of TSHT.

• A signed offer letter, contract, and agreement to terms of employment is required if selected for the job.

• Vacation policy will be 2 weeks of paid leave for the first 3 years. After 3 years, an additional week may be added.
