The Outdoor Adventure Department at Rock Creek Cattle Company is interviewing candidates for Horseback Manager. RCCC is located in the heart of beautiful and historic southwest Montana: ideal for the outdoor enthusiast.

The Outdoor Adventure Center has a long and growing list of adventures waiting for our guests to explore and enjoy. We pride ourselves in the ability to tailor each guest activity to all experience levels, from beginner to expert.

This is a full-time seasonal position that will run April 25 - Mid-October (approximately).

The Horseback Manager provides the best possible experience for members and guests by maintaining healthy horses, a safe riding environment through communication and instructions, and a fun riding environment. He or she leads and directs the wrangler team which includes but is not limited to making schedules, delegating daily chores, assigning, and approving horses to be ridden, and member/guest rides to lead. The Horseback Manager works with Director of Outdoor Activities and Ranch Manager to collaborate on safety and best practices. These duties are all subject to revisions based on operational demands.

Duties/Responsibilities*

Supervise wranglers. Monitor each horse’s feed and condition. Monitor cattle feed and condition. Keep an inventory of all equipment and notify supervisor when more equipment is needed or needs to be repaired. Maintain equipment in good working order and coordinate with other departments when repair of machinery/equipment is needed. Make schedules and direct the wranglers on day-to-day tasks. Order hay and schedule deliveries. Assist with the development of equine programming. Responsible for the repair of fences as needed. Responsible for repair and maintenance of tack. Groom, saddle, and bridle horses ensuring proper fit of all tack before sending the horse out. Assist with reservations and scheduling rides. Lead trail rides. Lead private and group horseback riding lessons. Have guest horses ready 30 minutes prior to scheduled ride times. Following all rides, un-tack, groom, and wash, as needed, all horses and tack. Maintain records of all trail rides, including horses used, and destination. Keep the tack room clean and organized. Make decisions and coordinate with Assistant GM and Veterinarians in the care of injured or ill horses. Maintain the area in a clean and tidy condition, including the horse pens. (Remove manure, horse hair, old hay, trash, etc.)

Required Skills/Abilities

Work long and perhaps erratic hours which include overtime, split-shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must have high level of interpersonal skills with ability to handle sensitive information appropriately. Must have ability to represent the company in a positive and professional manner. Must have strong oral communication skills to tactfully and professionally interact with individuals at all levels. Must possess strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively present information. Must be able to influence others and build positive work environments and relationships through enthusiasm, sociability, supportiveness, insight, and cooperation. Must demonstrate ability to build trust and respect. Must work productively, both independently and in various group settings with conflicting interests to achieve completion of common goals. Must be self-assured and confident in a variety of settings with a strong belief in own capabilities. Must have a valid Driver's License to take horses off ranch for full day or lunch rides. Must strive to continuously build knowledge with an open mind to constructive feedback. Must have valid CPR/First Aid certification. Must have personal gear and tack required for wrangling.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma preferred.
  • Experience training horses required.
  • Background working with people in a service-type industry required.
  • Experience with horse grooming and feeding required.
  • Proficient in riding and handling horses is required.
  • Experience with riding all sorts of horses at all levels of training required.
  • Experience with driving tractors, trucks and pulling 8 horse trailer required.
  • Experience doctoring common horse injuries and ailments required.
  • Prior experience working with cattle required.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of horseback riding (6+ hours a day). Must be able to repeatedly lift saddles above shoulder height (30 pounds). Regular movement including but not limited to bending, squatting, balancing, reaching, twisting, lifting, climbing, crawling, pulling, and carrying. Continuous use of arms, hands, and fingers. Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the property. Must be able to exert up to 70 pounds of force occasionally and able to constantly lift, carry, pull, or push up to 70 pounds or more. Team-lift must be used on any object over 70 pounds. May be required work in excessive heat and cold in association with outdoor environment.

Work Environment

The Horseback Manager is required to work in an environment that can be fast paced. They work outside and are sometimes exposed to excessive cold/heat and unpredictable outside weather conditions. They are exposed to potentially dangerous and unpredictable equine and bovine behavior. The employee may be exposed to potentially dangerous ranching equipment.
