Fermilab is seeking an experienced and motivated Hydrogeologist to join to the Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Division at Fermilab. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Environmental Protection Department and will collaborate with various groups in support of Fermilab research and facility operations.

You will:
  • Lead the Groundwater Monitoring Program (GMP), including coordinating and/or participating in sampling and evaluation of results.
  • Be knowledgeable with environmental sampling procedures, supervising well and borehole drilling technology, and quality assurance and safety procedures.
  • Coordinate GMP with tritium monitoring plans and serve as the groundwater liaison with the Tritium Management Department.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with DOE and regulatory contacts.
  • Develop plans to run, modify or close regulatory permit monitoring requirements.
  • Ensure that the GMP is aligned with established local, state and federal regulations for established and emerging contaminants.
  • Have the ability to communicate GMP and related activities with employees, management, DOE and the members of the public.
  • Develop and implement division/section/center specific policies and procedures as needed to ensure compliance with Laboratory ESH and/or QA policies.
  • Coordinate and supervise ESH and/or QA programs in areas of specialization, and supervise and assure compliance with the Laboratory's ESH and/or QA policies, programs procedures and standards.
  • Provide guidance and interpretations to ESH and/or QA staff, line personnel and project managers on both routine and sophisticated ESH and/or QA matters and problems.
  • Maintain records and documents as required by applicable ESH and/or QA policies, permit requirements, codes, standards and DOE Orders.
  • Prepare reports for management and DOE based upon observations, interpretation of data, current regulations and lab reporting procedures; routinely work well with Division Heads, Department Heads and members of the Directorate on all ESH and/or QA issues.
  • Ensure that Division personnel are trained and align with environment, health and safety standards and requirements. Develop and present specialty training to Division staff and sub-contractors.
  • Plan and conduct inspections and accident/injury investigations recommending appropriate actions and participates in audits and trend analysis.
  • Review engineering documents for compliance with applicable codes and standards. Reviews are not limited to drawings, and the applicable codes and standards are not limited to ESH and/or QA.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene sampling and field environmental tests; collect samples for waste characterization that may require experienced knowledge and non-traditional procedures; initiate and conduct environmental and safety surveys.
  • Assist in selection of ESH equipment; may develop, modify, install, maintain, test or supervise equipment
  • Serve on Laboratory ESH and/or QA subcommittees and ad hoc groups; may serve as chair of the subcommittee, or chair divisional committees and projects.
  • Develop Laboratory ESH and/or QA policies by being an active participant in the activities of the subcommittee or an ad hoc group.
  • May supervise by recommending required personnel actions for the assigned area including, reviewing and approving attendance records, hiring, promotions, performance reviews, disciplinary actions and terminations of employment, as may be appropriate; ensure that subordinates are appropriately trained to operate in their areas of responsibility.
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

We are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental related field and 5+ years of confirmed experience
  • An advanced degree (masters or doctorate) and 3+ years of confirmed experience
  • Professional certification or registration in Hydrogeology and a minimum of 3+ years’ experience.
  • Digital literacy required for database entry and proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
