About the Role
Under general direction, the ISO & Terminal Compliance Manager is responsible for managing and implementing the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Quality programs for the Matson Companies. Plans and coordinates activities relating to compliance with safety and environmental programs for Matson terminals, Matson Logistics Warehouses, and certain Matson office locations. Manages existing and new environmental regulations on the local, state, federal and international level, such as stormwater (e.g. NPDES and regional permits), hazardous waste management (e.g RCRA), legacy contamination, and air permits. Manages OSHA, Facility MTSA, and state and federal motor carrier safety compliance. Tracks zero-emissions terminal and warehouse equipment and cold ironing opportunities, including seeking grant funding for zero-emissions projects.
Ensures the accomplishment of established goals and objectives with prescribed priorities, time limitations, and with fiscal responsibilities. Exercises independent judgment in the course of carrying out overall responsibilities and other activities as assigned. Assists in management and administration of safety, quality, environment, and security (SQES) programs for Matson, its subsidiaries, and major outside contractors. Makes recommendations in the formulation of goals and objectives. Designs and monitors safety, security, and environment policies, procedures, and programs. Coordinates the development of personnel training to prevent accidents or damage to the environment or company assets. This position involves travel, including occasional international travel, to support vessel and shoreside ISO audits, safety programs, and security programs.
What you’ll do:
- Effectively coordinate the SQES Departments at all terminals by leading twice-monthly meetings covering compliance and ISO issues.
- Manage compliance with federal, state, and local SQES regulations at all terminals and offices.
- Administer the corrective action system for Matson’s SQES shoreside management system and manages shoreside SQES procedures.
- Act as central point of contact for safety and environmental questions from employees, regulatory bodies and others for all Matson terminals, warehouses, and offices. Coordinate with local SQES personnel in to ensure the dissemination to all pertinent employees any information regarding new laws and regulations in the SQES areas.
- Support the editing and publishing of the bi-monthly SQES Bulletin as needed.
- Participate as a part of Matson’s emergency response system and be available as an alternate source of contact for emergency response at a Matson facility if the Director of SQES or the Sr. Manager of Safety and Security is not readily available.
- Participate in regulatory agency, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA), Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), and local working groups to influence positively the upcoming regulatory requirements. Monitor regulations for changes in applicable compliance and inform the appropriate departments within in Matson.
- In conjunction with the Senior Manager, Safety & Security, and the Senior Manager, Environment & Quality, maintain approved SQES procedures, guidelines and policies for company shoreside operations. Design such procedures to keep the company in compliance with applicable rules and regulations and ensure an ongoing awareness and sensitivity in all employees.
- Support the operation of the technical aspects of Matson’s SQES Management System (SMS), particularly those relating to environmental and quality, keeping company policies and procedures current and in compliance as required to maintain Matson’s certifications. Supervise the activities of all department administrative personnel, both permanent and temporary, that the department may engage. Ensure that documents issued as part of the management system meet system guidelines and standards.
- Support the development and implementation of Matson’s ISO 9001 quality management system and ISO 14001 environmental management system. Evaluate vessel and terminal waste streams to ensure Matson’s compliance with existing regulations and recommend better or more cost effective alternates to our current waste handling programs. Coordinate committee work at each certified location and monitor progress on adopted Objectives and Targets. Ensure the regular distribution of pertinent information to employees.
- Build networks with Matson personnel, industry experts, and government agencies to execute the responsibilities of the position effectively.
- Collaborate with others to identify areas for improvement and cost recovery opportunities and develops standards of best practices for processes.
- Travel required for conducting training and making physical inspections of the offices of Matson and subsidiaries and at terminal facilities.

And these qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with an environmental, industrial hygiene or engineering focus preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in the transportation industry.
- Familiarity with safety and environmental reporting requirements, both voluntary and regulatory, required.
- Excellent written and communication skills with the ability to lead meetings and present information in a clear and concise manner.
- Experience with managing OSHA regulations compliance.
- Familiarity with marine, terminal, and trucking operations in Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and USWC a plus.
- Travel is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain TWIC card.
Extra credit if you have:

The annual salary range for this position in California is $96,000 - $130,560. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
