Job Summary
:
The Laboratory and Safety Coordinator is responsible for chemical safety and disposal, safety equipment, managing the stockroom, ordering of purchases, coordinating and preparing introductory labs, and training of laboratory teaching assistants.
Responsibilities
:- Support laboratory teaching:
- Teach chemical safety course.
- Oversee lab teaching assistant safety training.
- Teach CHE200 Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene, twice per year.
- Prepare Chemicals and equipment for “introductory” and “general” chemistry lab courses. (CHE101D, CHE107D, CHE113D, CHE208, CHE215)
- Manage chemistry lab facilities and materials:
- Order chemicals and supplies.
- Maintain inventory records of chemicals and supplies.
- Assist with general maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
- Reconcile/allocate payments for department credit cards every month.
- Supervise chemical safety:
- Participate in managing the university’s chemical hygiene plan.
- Oversee departmental chemical storage.
- Perform and document regular laboratory safety inspections.
- Supervise collection and shipment of hazardous waste.
- Evaluate and update departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Oversee maintenance of lab safety equipment and lab cleanliness.
- Submit repair/maintenance requests and coordinate with Facilities Management on work to be done.
- Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for all Academic Departments.
Required Skills
:- Demonstrated ability to work with and support others in college laboratory.
- Excellent organizational skills, effective time-management, experience with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Working knowledge of chemical nomenclature for ordering and inventory.
- Working knowledge of chemical reactivity for lab prep and waste disposal.
- Working knowledge of laboratory safety best practices.
- Able to organize and manage multiple orders.
- Familiarity with hazardous waste collection and disposal procedures Coordinate with chemistry faculty on orders and safety.
- Ability to prepare introductory labs for about 20 students.
- Work well with lab students and student workers.
Required Experience
:
At least one year of experience managing a laboratory program, including ordering and safety.
Required Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field required. (Master’s degree preferred); Certified Scientific Material Manager preferred.
Additional Information
:- Working with chemicals (hazardous and non-hazardous).
- Working in a laboratory environment, sometimes requiring personal protective equipment (gloves, lab coat, goggles).
- Full-time; August 16 – May 31
- 10 hours/week; June 1-August 15
