JOB SUMMARY: Join the Santa Monica City Attorney's Office

The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office is currently seeking exceptional candidates for unpaid externship positions.

Law Student Externship Opportunities

The Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office Externship Program offers unpaid extern opportunities for law students, hands-on training and educational experience in the various areas of law practiced in a municipal law office. During the CAO Externship Program, externs rotate between the Litigation, Advisory, Consumer Protection, and Criminal Prosecution Units of the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office. In each rotation, externs learn about the work conducted in that unit (e.g., litigation, transactional/advisory, affirmative litigation, criminal), are assigned projects arising from the areas of law specific to that unit, and given the opportunity to gain practical experience by shadowing and/or participating in activities central to that unit’s practice.

Externs must abide by the highest ethical and professional standards. Candidates will be considered based on qualifications, including excellence in oral communication, and writing skills, proficiency in legal research, and interest in public service. Start and end dates are flexible, and may correspond to the student’s academic calendar.

Interested applicants should submit a single .pdf containing a cover letter, resume, writing sample of no more than ten pages, and the names of two references by email to CAO.Opportunities@santamonica.gov with the subject line: “Application – Externship.” A background check will be required prior to beginning the externship.
  • Applications are accepted year round.

Academic credit may be available, students should consult with their law school
