Library Circulation Spec provides customer service support and checks library materials in and out. Maintains accurate customer account information in the library’s database and handles and tracks incomplete, damaged, or missing library materials. Promotes the use of library materials by creating and maintaining displays. Assists customers with routine queries, explains or interprets library policies, and resolves customer issues. Creates library cards and accepts payment for damaged materials, fines, or non-resident library requests. This position works under limited supervision.

Essential Functions

Creates library cards for patrons seeking membership to the library and ensures accuracy of information. Assists customers with checkout, processes transactions, and resolves issues involving library cards and library materials at the circulation desk. Checks in returned items and pulls expired reserved items from shelves to ensure that library materials are available for customers. Provides assistance to customers in finding library materials by searching the Boise Public Library catalog or consulting other area libraries' catalogs. (50%)

Updates and maintains accurate customer account addresses in the library's database. Maintains an organized system for materials to be sent to other libraries, monitors overdue library items and handles or tracks incomplete, damaged, or missing library materials. Processes and receives payment for damaged or lost items and any fines imposed on the patron. (30%)

Provides customer service over the phone and performs additional projects that assist with annual self-assessments. Learns new operating systems and assists with the conversion process. Troubleshoots several kinds of technical issues. (20%)

Assists customers by providing literature and media recommendations based on customer requests at the information desk; responds to inquiries; fills out customer requests for items not found within the library system or through the Lynx

consortium; provides directions to customers on a variety of subjects; and provides excellent service based on any technological advancements made within the library. ()

Provides administration with statistics regarding library usage and submits purchase requests for new materials based on the needs of the customers. Communicates with other libraries in the area to resolve problems.

Maintains increased awareness of difficult situations in which security may need to be contacted. Maintains professionalism while assisting a high population of mentally ill, homeless and at-risk patrons while following an appropriate chain of command.

May serve as a lead circulation staff member in the absence of the supervisor and other support staff, directing workflow and resolving customer issues within established policies. Answers, explains or interprets library policies and general inquiries to customers.

Promotes the use of the library’s collections by creating and maintaining appealing displays of library materials. Organizes and straightens materials on shelves, paying close attention to call numbers, authors, and title orders.

Gathers and checks materials at the book drops and courier docking bays and ensures newly reserved materials are shelved or delivered in a timely manner through the library's curbside delivery process.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in a library or related field providing customer service, explaining and interpreting policies or resolving conflicts.

Knowledge of:; customer service techniques; standard library rules, policies, procedures and materials; basic computer operations and office terminology, procedures and equipment; and integrated library systems, circulation processes and procedures.

Ability to:; learn and use automated library systems; work independently and use initiative while performing duties; exercise tact, patience diplomacy and courtesy when dealing with patrons; carry out routine day-to-day activities within established guidelines and procedures; work with a diverse group of people, co-workers and the general public; navigate the library database to locate library materials; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Two years of experience providing customer service in a public library environment.

Knowledge of:; library collections and reference materials; and the Dewey decimal classification system, as well as an understanding of a library relational database software system.

Skills in the use of basic software applications such as Word and Excel.

Applicants must be able to pass:

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.
This position works: evening and weekend shifts on a rotating basis. May have mandatory meetings that occur outside of normal schedule.
