Job description

Under the general direction, design, implement, and/ordeploys tools for statistical analysis, machine learning, data acquisitions, data cleaning, modeling, data visualation. Perform professional work in training and mentoring students, collaborates with university-wide disciplines and library units toward shared goals; and the research, design, development, implementation and maintenance of data science projects. Work typically involves researching, writing algorithms and code to answer questions about data sets using machine learning or analytical tools to solve complex problems and or questions. May work with or lead others on larger project.

Essential Duties

Train and or mentor ASU students, faculty, and staff who are interested in learning more about data science by applying the concepts, topics, and tools to support the field. Work on and or develop research projects pertaining to statistics, machine learning, text analysis, data analysis, automated classification, and various modeling techniques. Provide individual and or group consultations with students, faculty and staff on data science projects. Design, develop, implement, test, and document approaches to data driven research problems.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and five (5) years’ experience to include programming in Python or R, OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree Computer Science, Informatics, Statistics, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge on current trends in software development tools, techniques, statistical computing, and programming languages (such as machine learning tools in Python; and experience in R, SPSS, and SAS).
  • Experience with programming best-practices, including test-drive development and design patterns
  • Experience in Java script skills.
  • A demonstration of past work via a GitHub repository.
  • Experience with Open Source software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information organization and retrieval technologies used to organize, store, and access digital content.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills; able to make presentations to faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Experience with delivering and prioritizing tasks on multiple projects simultaneously.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials.
  • Utilize computer, phone, and various technologies (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Zoom, etc.), office equipment (copier, printer, scanner, etc.).
  • May oversee various projects within the library involving handling, sorting, shelving or relocation of physical materials.
  • Responsible for oversight of building security, maintenance issues, and compliance with university policy in absence of direct supervisor.
  • May work alternate hours, including nights and/or weekends, as needed.
