Position Summary
Responsible for performing supervisory work related to overseeing the workflow of a unit with the library. Duties include: hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining staff within the unit; serving on library management team; chairing library committees; developing and administering policies and procedures for area of responsibility; handling escalated customer complaints; managing vendor relationships; and assisting in the planning and development of library budget. Work is performed with general direction, working from broad goals and policies.

Essential Functions

  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
  • Direct and coordinate personnel of the assigned library service unit; including selecting, training, supervising, scheduling and evaluating.
  • Design, create, and plan library classes, events and services.
  • Coordinate and perform collection development to maintain integrity of the print and non-print materials and resources; identify strengths and weaknesses of the collection; oversee selection, retention, repair and removal of resources. Evaluate gifts for addition to collection.
  • Direct planning, implementation and evaluation of the reader's advisory, reference services, and classes and events to encourage reading, viewing, listening and use of library materials and facilities. Review professional journals and participate in professional organizations to remain current on issues affecting library information services and literacy.
  • Coordinate and deliver literature-related, age appropriate classes and events highlighting the library collection for adults, young adults and/or children and their caregivers.
  • Market and promote use of the makerspace and collaborate with staff in the assigned library service unit to develop makerspace programs.
  • Develop new services and procedures. Maintain records, statistics and written procedures.
  • Participate as a member of the library's management team to determine library-wide goals and objectives.
  • Oversee development of flyers, bibliographies, search guides, and other promotional materials while maintaining City of Lewisville brand standards.
  • Interpret and enforce City and library policies and ensure safety of customers and staff.
  • Respond to customers regarding complaints/concerns of intellectual freedom and requests to reconsider library materials and resources.
  • Promote library services to the community and participate in community organizations as appropriate. Confer with schools, parents, community groups and businesses to assist in developing programs and improve adult, young adult and children's literacy and communication skills.
  • Coordinate with other library supervisors and staff to promote library activities.
  • Participate in the preparation and administration of the library budget at the direction of the Library Director. Submits budget recommendations, and monitors expenditures.
  • Adopt and promote City goals and initiatives such as Lewisville 2025 and The Lewisville Way.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Master Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association required.
Experience
3 years professional experience. Two years supervision experience preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of contemporary library theory and practice as related to collection development, readers' advisory, reference and electronic services, programming, classification and cataloging.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, library automation systems and the Internet as related to library operations.
  • Knowledge of search and retrieval techniques and skills to obtain requested information.
  • Knowledge of library science principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of research methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of electronic databases.
  • Knowledge of reference materials, techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of literature in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of book selection principles.

Ability to:

  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload and schedule personnel for maximum efficiency.

Skills:

  • Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office, Google, or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.
  • Skill in monitoring and evaluating subordinates.
  • Skill in delegating and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in developing and administering budgets.
  • Skill in developing collections.
  • Skill in developing web sites and social media content for reliability, accuracy, and appropriateness.
  • Skill in troubleshooting computer problems.

Adult Services

  • Coordinates the operation of the Adult Services Department, which serves adults ages 18 and up.
  • Supervise makerspace operations and staff.
  • Coordinates Interlibrary Loan service.

Knowledge of:

  • Every Child Ready to Read
  • STEM or STEAM programming and services

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Fluently read, write and speak Spanish and English.

Special Requirements

  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Pay: $61,615.00 - $86,624.00 per year
