The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation ( DPOR ) is on mission to provide the best customer experience possible as we build Virginia’s workforce helping qualified people of all backgrounds start businesses and work in their chosen fields. As a Licensing Specialist, you will play a key role in Virginia’s economic vitality. The Licensing Specialist processes applications and changes for licensure/certification from businesses and individuals for the regulatory boards assigned to each section. This position provides telephone coverage and provides thorough and accurate information related to the statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures for the boards with which assigned.

In this position, you will serve as Licensing Specialists for Board sections, i.e. Contractors, Real Estate, Barbers and Cosmetology, Architects, Engineers, Land Surveyors, Asbestos, Lead, Home Improvement, Wastewater Operators, Community Interest Communities, etc. While the immediate needs are for Licensing Specialists in our Barbers and Cosmetology, Hearing Aid Specialists and Opticians section, Contractors section, and Real Estate section, this posting may be used to fill Licensing Specialist vacancies in other sections should the need arise within 90 days of the close date.

The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation ( DPOR ) is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. DPOR issues professional licenses, certificates, or registrations to more than 300,000 individuals and businesses. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state law and regulations.

TELEWORK OPTIONS : Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 120 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Customer service experience with exceptional customer service skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in handling phone calls and the preparation of written correspondence
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to analyze and compare information, draw conclusions, exercise discretion and judgement in eligibility determinations
  • Ability to work as a team member with limited supervision while handling multiple tasks.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook or equivalent software applications
  • High school graduate or equivalent


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some post high school course work preferred
  • Experience in determining eligibility for licensure or programs preferred
  • Experience in a call center environment preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and entry of information into a database preferred
  • Bilingual skills preferred with a strong preference for fluency in Spanish
