Summary:

Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining order in Gunkler Natatorium by preventing accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations and ordinances governing the conduct of patrons. Lifeguards are also responsible for monitoring potential hazards or unsafe conditions, providing first aid to patrons, and performing custodial duties to properly maintain the natatorium.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Lifeguard certified with CPR/AED

Physical requirements:
  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Be alert and prevent accidents in the natatorium.
  • Provide rescue and emergency assistance in the event of an accident.
  • Communicate and enforce pool regulations and rules in a personable and professional manner.
  • Communicate any potentially dangerous elements of the facility to the supervisor.
  • Responsible for opening and closing the natatorium. (Unlocking and locking locker room doors and exterior doors before and after their shift).
  • Set up pool for various activities such as lap swim, recreation classes, etc.
  • Wear staff uniform and have a whistle with you at all times.
  • Test the water, record results and report imbalances to supervisor.
  • Record daily participation numbers and complete daily activity reports.
  • Daily cleaning and maintenance duties. These duties include cleaning the pool deck and showers, picking up trash on the deck, washing the pool deck, surface skimming as needed, keeping the deck clear of all obstructions, etc.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service training as set up by the supervisor.
  • Be friendly and establish rapport with patrons.
  • Work your scheduled shifts or find a substitute.
  • Fill out accident reports for incidents in the natatorium.
  • Promote an environment that supports Berea College’s mission and values.
  • Other duties as assigned.
