Lead Machinist / Machine Shop Supervisor

Position Type/Hours:

Full-time exempt position. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. OR 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Position Profile:

This position is responsible for overseeing the Machine Shop and its personnel in day-to-day operations. This includes:

• Coordinating workload schedules with production manager to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Ensuring product deadlines are met.
• Operating machines that perform a variety of processing operations.

Essential Functions:

• Oversee job performance of machine shop employees
• Resolves problems efficiently and effectively for machine operators
• Works directly with Design Engineers and Production Manager to review and implement changes to final design to improve manufacturability and reduce quality errors.
• Track and record errors to analyze operator training opportunities; write and deliver annual reviews.
• Responsible for training and development of new and existing employees.
• Set up and operate machines (automated and manual) such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
• Review electronic or written blueprints or specifications for a job and check for accuracy.
• Plan the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
• Monitor output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
• Modify programs in response to problems.
• Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages.

Other Duties:

• Sourcing parts
• Requisition tools, equipment, and replacement parts while maintaining inventory levels
• Ensure safety regulations are always followed.

Education and Experience:

• 5+ years of experience in a machine shop environment
• Solid understanding of machine shop quality control
• Vocational school/accredited apprenticeship program or 2 years’ experience in a machine shop environment
• Ability to use precision tools (e.g., calipers) to take accurate measurements
• Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and manuals
• Knowledge of CAM software
• Knowledge of metal properties and other material

Position Type, Work Environment & Travel

• Full time, Exempt
• Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration
• Noise level in the work environment can be loud
• No travel required

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
