Summary of Duties
Maintains City buildings and grounds, including the operation, maintenance, and repair of work related vehicles and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collects and dumps trash;
- Trims trees;
- Completes work orders;
- Purchases maintenance products as needed using City purchasing card;
- Performs maintenance or installation of equipment, plumbing, and electrical systems including light replacement, fence repair, and lavatory maintenance;
- Maintains and repairs vehicles and equipment as needed;
- Removes snow and ice and applies treatments as needed;
- Operates and maintains a variety of equipment including paint machines, mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, spreaders as needed.
- Responds to City emergencies and priorities and maintains mobile pager or phone to be called-in as needed;
- Assists with special projects and performs other similar duties as assigned.
Essential duties specific to the Buildings assignment:
- Maintains electrical, plumbing, roof, furniture, appliances, paint, and drywall as needed;
Essential duties specific to the Grounds assignment:
- Mows grass using riding mowers, push mowers, and weed trimmers;
- Prepares and cares for flowerbeds and grass turf by watering, spraying, fertilizing, mulching, weeding, tilling, and aerating;
- Cleans sidewalks and park trails using push brooms, shovels, blowers, and mechanical sweepers;
- Cleans fencerows, plants trees, and paints;
- Maintains sports fields and prepares fields for special events;
- Removes graffiti;
- Digs holes and lifts and spreads bags of soil, mulch, or chemicals as needed;
- Repairs, troubleshoots and installs irrigation systems.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must obtain and a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
- Must maintain a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
- Newly hired Employee has 120 days to obtain the written exams and must obtain the CDL with air endorsement no later than the completion of his or her sixth month of employment.
- Must pass physical exam and drug test as prescribed by City policy.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Knowledge of current maintenance practices and their application;
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with coworkers;
- Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and equipment;
- Knowledge of safety practices around power tools and equipment;
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, pumps, motors, turf maintenance, landscaping, metal working, concrete, construction, irrigation, and machinery maintenance;
- Knowledge of chemicals used to treat fountain water;
- Ability to respond to high priority issues in a timely manner;
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals who may be confused, upset, or irate;
- Ability to identify and repair problems, exercise initiative, and apply existing knowledge and skills;
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to review work orders and other directions;
- Ability to perform duties as part of a team effort;
- Ability to use City resources effectively and efficiently.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Other Requirements
- Work is performed in an office environment and in the field, under the full range of climatic conditions of heat, cold, rain, snow or other forms of precipitation, as well as exposure to dust, dirt, fumes and other atmospheric conditions, human and animal waste, and infectious diseases;
- May be exposed to heights or precarious places;
- May be required to reach with hands and arms, sit, stand, talk and hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, see, and drive a motor vehicle;
- May be required to lift/move up to 50 pounds unassisted, heavier lifting with help from others and equipment;
- May require irregular hours and be required to serve in an “on-call” capacity.
