Role Summary

The Managing Director, Compensation & Benefits sets the long-term strategy and oversees the financial and service level performance of the compensation and benefits functions at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction to design, implement, communicate and support the administration of total rewards. The Managing Director works collaboratively throughout the organization creating solutions that have the potential for transformational change that will enable the company to attract, reward, and retain top talent. This position also plays a critical role in developing content and materials for our Compensation Committee and Board of Directors.

Key Duties

  • Establish strategic goals and direction for a team of directors and managers responsible for compensation, health and retirement benefits, and absence management. Communicate a compelling vision and motivate the team to execute on strategic goals. Ensure seamless delivery of a high level of customer service to internal customers.
  • Build, inspire, and lead a team, systems, and scalable processes which result in an effective approach to the company’s long-term total rewards strategy.
  • Lead strategic initiatives related to total rewards design and administration, including the continuous improvement of programs, practices and procedures.
  • Provide the foundation for improved compensation decision-making tools and transactional processing capabilities.
  • Partners with other Managing Directors on the People Team to apply research, best practices and innovative approaches to attract, retain and recognize top talent.
  • Forge strong relationships with divisional leaders and People Team members by listening, understanding needs, defining shared objectives, proactively consulting, and collaborating to meet organizational goals.
  • Apply appropriate metrics, processes, technologies, decision-making, and record-keeping for overall performance of compensation, health benefits, wellness and retirement programs.
  • Manage and drive specific projects as determined in the HR planning process and participates in functional and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and functions.
  • Influence company culture through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience within compensation, benefits, HR or finance.
  • A minimum of 5 years of people leadership experience in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance or related area or willingness to obtain a Bachelor’s degree within 6 years of start date.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, judgement and ability to tie department objectives to larger organizational goals.
  • Strong judgment with a demonstrated ability to handle complex issues, multiple tasks, confidential information, and competing priorities with skills, discretion, a strong attention to detail, flexibility and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high performing, professional level teams including demonstrated ability to attract, assess, hire, develop, coach, reward/recognize, and retain employees; including managers and individual contributors.
  • Consultative, influential, facilitative and collaborative with an ability to engage with, establish credibility and influence internal customers including senior and executive levels.
  • Strong knowledge of trends, legislative activity and regulatory issues that affect compensation, retirement and benefits.
  • Excellent strategy, organizational, interpersonal, leadership and customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
