Education Requirements:
Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or PhD/MD) with post-doctoral training in an accredited microbiology fellowship program (ABMM or ABP) or clinical laboratory training/experience during medical residency. Relevant training in Clinical Microbiology required.
Experience Required:
2 years’ experience supervising a clinical microbiology testing.
Skills Required:
A focus on antimicrobial stewardship, in-depth knowledge of CLSI guidelines, lab compliance, lab safety, time management skills/work independently, ability to maintain records, work in a fast-paced environment, ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently, follow lab SOPs, and oversee method development and validations. Additional expertise in molecular testing preferred.
Professional Certifications or Licenses:
Board certified or board eligible in Clinical Microbiology by either the American Board of Medical Microbiology or American Board of Pathology (in Clinical Pathology). New York State Certificate of Qualification (CQ) in microbiology preferred.
Roles and Responsibilities:
· Responsible for the oversight of all Microbiology testing and staff.
· Provide diagnostic services in all areas of Clinical Microbiology.
· Answer clinical calls regarding micriobiology and molecular biology
· Develop a focus on antimicrobial stewardship.
· Ensure that the clinical, scientific, and technical aspects of testing for microbiology
reflect industry standards and follow regulations.
· Evaluate current and new testing platforms based on the needs and capacity of the
department.
· Plan and have oversight of the implementation of new instrumentation to increase
efficiency of laboratory processes.
· Understand the unique needs of private diagnostic laboratories and fulfill them.
· Critically reviews laboratory key performance indicators, quality assurance
indicators, and reactive rates.
· Critical evaluation of SOPs pertaining to microbiology testing.
· Experience in both clinical microbiology and molecular testing preferred.
· Experience with LDT validation of clinical assays preferred.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
· Supports ongoing changes in a professional manner, contribute to a positive work
environment and to the team effort of the laboratory.
