Perform software and database development activities to meet International Space Station (ISS) Mission Evaluation Room (MER) requirements:

  • Maintain awareness of available technologies to evaluate their suitability and provide recommendations of proposed solutions.
  • Gather and document user requirements.
  • Design and develop software solutions to meet user requirements, including custom in-house built telemetry data, console logging, and web-based collaboration tools.
  • Support the planning and coordinating of development, testing, and release activities and schedules.
  • Maintain internal software development and procedure documentation.
  • Support ISS MER IT Support tasks as assigned.
  • Research and answer IT-related user questions.
  • Provide on-console MER support during complex or critical ISS MER operations (may involve short-term shift work).
  • Assist with training users on ISS MER telemetry data systems and custom software.
  • Communicate with technical teams and management to ensure that issues are addressed, and project deadlines are met.
  • Actively participate in team projects.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or coursework in Java, c#, ASP.NET, jQuery, MVC, and the Umbraco Content Management System (CMS) is a plus.
  • Experience or coursework in Microsoft Windows or Linux system administration, including shell scripting, is a plus.
  • Experience in Microsoft SQL Server administration is a plus.
  • Experience in network and firewall administration is a plus.
  • Experience supporting 24/7/365 mission-critical systems is a plus.


Education and Relevant Work Experience:

  • BA / BS degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • 10+ years of relevant software engineering experience, including complex web system development.
  • Experience with professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and excellent follow-through skills.
  • Strong technical software skills with the ability to quickly learn new development languages, platforms, and paradigms.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with customers and management.
