Job description

The Miami Herald is expanding its coverage of climate change and sea rise. We are seeking a multimedia engagement reporter, a key role in a growing team that will tackle complex and critical challenges already shaping just about every aspect of life in South Florida.

The questions, and stories, are countless. Will housing get even more expensive? What's the next tropical disease threat coming our way? Can coral reefs and the Everglades survive? We're looking for an experienced multimedia journalist who can explore not just threats but the region's pioneering efforts to confront them. This journalist should have a demonstrated ability to write with accuracy, clarity and speed; execute and collaborate on multimedia projects including podcasts and video; engage and build audiences through social media; and take the lead on an environment newsletter.

As our multimedia engagement reporter, you would be at the forefront of coverage with a focus on conceiving and producing daily stories, monitoring statewide issues and coverage, and tapping social media platforms to engage our audience and find out what matters most to them. This reporter will also take the lead on a soon-to-be launched climate newsletter and help curate a climate reporting destination page on www.miamiherald.com. This reporter would also coordinate coverage with editors and the Herald's climate/environment reporter.

Qualifications:

  • Several years breaking news and enterprise reporting experience, ideally covering climate issues.

  • A track record of bringing fresh ideas and high energy to the job and successful collaboration with a team of reporters and editors.

  • Multimedia experience and an ability to deliver stories in whatever format best suits the topic and audience at hand, be it a video, podcast or narrative.

  • An understanding of digital publishing, online metrics and reader engagement and how to incorporate that information into your work to help our newsroom reach its audience growth goals.

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Job requirements:

  • This is a two-year contract position, with salary and benefits.

  • This is predominantly a weekday job, but requires flexibility to work some evenings, occasional weekends and holidays.

  • While the position is based in Miami, there will be flexibility in workplace arrangement.

  • Proficiency with AP style and a strong command of spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Understanding of and adherence to professional journalism standards for balanced, fair and accurate reporting.
