Duties

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 700 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

The Nurse position is located in the House of Representatives Child Care Center (HRCCC). The HRCCC has been providing full-day, year-round, quality childcare for children of the Members of Congress, staff, and House support personnel since 1987. Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the HRCCC is a developmentally based childcare program where staff work as partners with parents in the development of the whole child, including their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Our mission is to provide exceptional quality care and developmentally appropriate learning experiences in a safe, nurturing, and diverse environment to support the children and families of the House Community. This position serves as the Nurse and is considered a part of the Center Leadership Team and provides coaching services to staff.

Major Duties:

Provides onsite assessment of sick or injured children and staff. Provides care, first aid, and/or emergency care as needed. Identifies health problems and makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment. Communicates information to families and other relevant parties, including primary care providers and emergency responders. Contacts families about symptoms requiring exclusion and provides guidelines for return.

Tracks contagious illness occurrences throughout the House Child Care Center over time; sends notification of contagious illness.
Maintains and tracks children’s medical, dental, screening, and immunization records. Maintains accurate records and logs in a timely and organized fashion and meets all relevant deadlines; maintains data confidentiality.

Maintains basic pharmacological knowledge and oversees the administration of medication.

Supervises special health care and food/nutrition plans and any accommodations necessary to serve children with special needs. Arranges care plan meetings with families and classroom teachers and supports classroom teachers with implementation of plans. Works with teachers to ensure all health needs are met within and away from the Center.

Develops familiarity and maintains compliance with all applicable legal requirements including House, Committee, CAO, and House Child Care Canter rules, practices, policies, and procedures.

Develops, implements, and/or enforces laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies related to health and safety. Provides feedback on policies and procedures as needed.

Is an active leader in the House Child Care Center and the CAO; brings to Directors’ attention any relevant information or issues concerning or related to staff, children, and/or families. Shows initiative towards the improvement of provided services by sharing ideas and participating in meetings.

Assists in planning, developing, scheduling, and providing staff in-service training and evaluation of child care staff utilizing in-house and/or external resources. Assesses knowledge of health, development, and safety in children and families; provides curriculum and training support as indicated.

Performs other official duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and/or National Certified School Nurse credential preferred).

Current registration as a registered nurse.

Possession and maintenance of a BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers, including Infant/Child/Adult.

Experience working with sick or injured children; experience in pediatric nursing, community or school health, public health, emergency care, and triage preferred.

Knowledge of basic infant and child health and development.

Knowledge of health and safety standards for center-based child care settings.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

This position is located in a school setting that is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Typical workplace safety precautions apply. The work involves light physical activity and may include moderate physical activity, such as moving furniture and equipment, lifting and moving children, pushing cribs/carts/strollers, and participating in planned physical exercises with children (e.g., jumping, dancing, running). The incumbent must be able to meet minimum physical requirements and work environment demands.

Participate in training to obtain/maintain awareness of and ensure adherence to all safety policies, procedures, and processes to include but not limited to allergies, other dietary restrictions, health conditions, and emergency response protocols.

Ability to successfully complete a physical exam, HRCCC immunization requirements, and tuberculosis test prior to employment and annually thereafter (current documentation may not be older than 12 months).

Security Requirements:

Must successfully complete a criminal history records check.

Employee may be subject to drug testing in accordance with the CAO Drug Free Workplace Plan.

Must successfully complete a Public Trust investigation with a Child Registry check.
