JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of this classification is to provide medical care and screening to inmates at the County correctional center. Employee in this classification administers medications, obtains medical information and history of all detainees, assesses emergencies and provides proper medical care, and prepares accurate documentation of all care provided.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Screens inmates; obtains medical history; conducts physical and visual assessments for recent injury; performs tuberculosis testing on inmates and staff; detoxifies inmates from drugs and alcohol.
Conducts sick call; assists in the delivery of medications to inmates; checks the accuracy of medications sent from the pharmacy; orders medication; provides special care to insulin dependent diabetics.
Provides emergency care and assessment in medical emergencies; provides post-operative care for inmates; removes sutures and staples; cares for wounds; arranges for lab tests and x-rays.
Provides assistance to doctor; makes doctors appointments for inmates; arranges mental health appointments; assists with medical transfers to other facilities.
Checks jail roster daily; updates files on in-house inmates and released inmates; maintains records on inmate care and medications disbursed; reviews hospital statements, pharmacy, doctor, and housed inmate statements for payment.
Responds to calls from facility concerning recreation yard injuries, seizures, chest pains, psychological problems and other medical emergencies.
Provides immediate assessment of inmates requiring special attention while in booking process; notifies sergeant if inmate is too ill to be incarcerated.
Operates a copier, facsimile machine, adding machine, glucometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, EKG machine, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Responds to inmate complaints; provides first aid.
Answers the telephone; maintains files.
Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's degree with course work emphasis in nursing; one year of experience in nursing; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Georgia Registered Nurse (RN) license or License Practical Nurse (LPN).
